Falkirk Signs Finley Barbrook on Loan: McGlynn's Ambitious Plans

John McGlynn has landed the midfielder he has been chasing all summer – and immediately made it clear he is not finished yet.

Falkirk have brought in Ipswich Town youngster Finley Barbrook on a season-long loan, the 21-year-old becoming the club’s 13th signing of a frantic window as the Bairns gear up for Sunday’s trip to Motherwell.

Barbrook arrives from a club now operating in the Premier League, but his education has been forged lower down the ladder. The 6ft 2in defensive midfielder spent last season with Colchester United in League Two, making 16 league appearances and scoring once. It was a solid first taste of senior football and enough to convince McGlynn that he was worth waiting for.

“Finley’s someone we’ve had on the radar for some time,” the Falkirk manager said, underlining just how long this move has been in the works. He admitted he wanted the deal done earlier, but the tone quickly shifted to satisfaction. “We’re delighted to have him.”

McGlynn likes what he sees: a modern holding midfielder who can both protect and play. Barbrook is described as an all-rounder, comfortable taking the ball from deep, threading passes and covering ground with real athleticism. The physical profile matters too. At 6ft 2in, he brings a presence Falkirk have been searching for in the middle of the park.

The manager did not hide the balancing act behind the scenes. He talked about the constant trade-off between size and subtlety, about the risk of losing quality when you go bigger. Barbrook, he believes, breaks that rule – “a well-balanced boy” who offers physicality without surrendering technique. In McGlynn’s mind, this is the exact type of midfielder his squad has been missing.

That explains the patience. Falkirk waited, held their nerve and pushed for their first choice rather than settling for a quicker fix. “We’ve been patient waiting on him because he was the one that we wanted,” McGlynn said, a line that tells its own story about how central Barbrook could become to Falkirk’s plans.

Yet even after signing off on a 13th summer arrival, McGlynn’s recruitment drive is not over. Asked if more business could follow, he did not hesitate. It could be as many as three new faces, he revealed, if everything falls into place. The market remains tight, the competition fierce, but Falkirk believe they have the scope – and the ambition – to keep going.

The squad that walks out at Motherwell on Sunday will not be the finished article. McGlynn has made that clear. The question now is how different it might look by the time the window finally slams shut.
