Francesco Totti Confirms Offers from Top European Clubs at Age 48

It sounds unbelievable, yet Francesco Totti, the 2006 World Cup champion, revealed he received offers from Serie A clubs when he was 48 years old. Although retired since 2017, Totti confirmed inquiries came through in October 2024.

Offers from Genoa and Como

Totti declined approaches from Genoa and Como, despite the serious nature of these proposals. He mentioned that Genoa's coach, Alberto Gilardino, another Italian World Cup winner, was 42 at the time, and Como had Cesc Fàbregas on the bench at 37. This meant Totti would have been significantly older than the coaching staff guiding him, which struck him as unusual.

"These are not fairy tales, this is the plain truth. Incredible, but true. Crazy," Totti wrote in his autobiography Oltre, as reported by Corriere della Sera.

Training and Preparation for a Comeback

He took the decision seriously enough to resume training and adjust his diet by cutting out bread and sweets. Totti admitted giving up sweets was challenging. His body responded well to training aside from typical aches associated with nearing 50 years of age. He pushed himself professionally but experienced moments of doubt.

"My head said I could say yes, my heart said no. Then the roles reversed: my thoughts put on the brakes and my pulse sped up," Totti shared.

Why He Ultimately Declined

The main obstacle wasn’t his age but loyalty to Roma, the club where he spent his entire professional career. The thought of playing for a different team felt like a betrayal, something he couldn’t accept regardless of his age.

"Sporting betrayal knows no age, whether you are 18 or 48," he explained.

Genoa was the first to contact him directly, and the seriousness of their offer surprised Totti. Yet, after reflecting on his feelings and connection with Roma, he decided against making a comeback.
