Genoa's Striker Search: Taremi and Ferguson Options
Genoa’s striker hunt has taken another twist, with former Inter forward Mehdi Taremi added to a growing shortlist as the club scrambles for a new No. 9 before the window shuts.
Ferguson the priority, but time is the enemy
Daniele De Rossi has a clear first choice: Evan Ferguson. The Brighton striker fits the profile Genoa want, and talks over a loan are described as moving forward. The problem is his ankle.
Ferguson is still working his way back from surgery, and the uncertainty over his return date is slowing everything down. Genoa like him enough to wait – but not enough to risk going into the season short up front.
So the search widens.
Taremi in the frame, but not at the front
Into that picture steps Mehdi Taremi. The Iranian international, who left Inter before hitting 16 goals for Olympiacos last season and featured at this summer’s World Cup, is firmly on Genoa’s radar.
He is not at the top of De Rossi’s list, according to Il Secolo XIX via CalcioMercato, but he is very much in the conversation. Other clubs are circling too, so any move would require speed and conviction from Genoa’s hierarchy.
For now, Taremi is the experienced alternative: proven in Europe, battle-tested, and available if the Ferguson plan drags on too long.
Lucca and Serie A familiarity
There is also a domestic route. Genoa are looking closely at Lorenzo Lucca, currently at Napoli and due at Marassi this weekend as an opponent. A loan is under consideration, and the timing of that head‑to‑head only sharpens the focus.
Lucca offers Serie A familiarity and a different physical profile, and facing him in person may help confirm whether he is the right fit for De Rossi’s system.
Foreign options on the table
The net stretches beyond Italy. Genoa are tracking Milutin Osmajic of Preston, the Montenegrin forward who has built his reputation in the English game, and Moroccan striker Tawfik Bentayeb at Union Touarga.
Each name represents a different kind of gamble: less proven at the very top level, but potentially cheaper, hungrier, and easier to secure quickly.
De Rossi and the club’s directors are effectively running against the clock, weighing every option, every loan formula, every compromise. The need is clear. The profiles are on the table.
Now the question is simple: do Genoa wait for their ideal man in Ferguson, or pivot decisively to Taremi, Lucca, or one of the foreign bets before the market door slams shut?
