Glentoran Edges Linfield in Women's Irish Cup Semi-Final
Glentoran booked their place in the semi-finals of the Women’s Irish Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 win over fierce rivals Linfield at the Blanchflower Stadium, driven there by a ruthless brace from Naomi McLaughlin.
The forward broke the deadlock on 36 minutes, striking first in a tense, scrappy contest that had threatened to drift towards half-time without a breakthrough. Linfield, stung but not sunk, hit back through Cora Chambers, who levelled for the Blues to ignite the tie and the home support.
For a spell, the game hung in the balance. Challenges sharpened, passes quickened, and both sides chased the moment that would tilt the night.
It was McLaughlin who found it. With eight minutes left, she struck again, her second of the evening restoring Glentoran’s lead and, this time, keeping it. Kim Turner’s side saw out the closing stages with composure to secure their place in the final four.
Cliftonville cruise past Derry City
Holders Cliftonville made lighter work of their quarter-final, easing past Derry City 3-0 to keep their grip on the trophy intact.
An early own goal gave the Reds a platform, settling any nerves and forcing Derry to chase. Cliftonville then stretched away, Teegan Lynch adding the second before the interval and Louise McDaniel striking after the break to complete a controlled, professional victory.
Crusaders hold off champions Sion Swifts
At Seaview, Crusaders Strikers had to dig much deeper to edge out Sion Swifts 2-1 in another tight encounter.
Ali Nelson put the Premiership side in front, and when Rebecca Bassett doubled the advantage, Crusaders looked in command against a Sion team already crowned Championship winners. The tie refused to die, though. Substitute Caoimhe Heron pulled one back for the Swifts to set up a nervy finish, but Crusaders stood firm to reach the semis.
Lisburn complete semi-final line-up
Lisburn claimed the final semi-final spot with a narrow 1-0 win over Ballymena United, sealing a place in a last four now packed with storylines: the holders, the rivals, the battlers, and the dark horses.
The bracket is set. The margins are shrinking. One more step, and it’s a cup final.
