Ismaël Bennacer’s Milan story is over. Not with a roar at San Siro, but with a contract termination and a farewell video on a phone screen.

Milan have confirmed the mutual termination of the Algerian’s deal, clearing the way for his move to Al-Gharafa in the Qatar Stars League. At 28, and after a brutal run of injuries and loans, Bennacer’s next chapter will unfold far from the Curva Sud he once commanded.

From Scudetto cornerstone to injury exile

When Bennacer arrived from Empoli in 2019, he was a project player. He left as a Scudetto winner and one of the most-used midfielders of the club’s modern era.

“For more than five years, I wore this shirt with pride and passion alongside incredible team-mates, supported by your unconditional love. Winning the Scudetto in this shirt is one of the most beautiful memories of my career, and playing in front of you at San Siro was one of the greatest honours.”

No drama, no public dispute. Just a mutual decision that the cycle had ended, the curtain finally drawn after a series of loans had already hinted at a permanent separation.

A new stage in Qatar

Bennacer now heads to Al-Gharafa, a club looking to climb after a fourth-place finish last season under manager Pedro Martins. For the Qatari side, he brings European pedigree, title-winning experience and a point to prove. For Bennacer, this is a reset — a chance to play regularly again, to lead rather than fight for minutes, to test whether the sharpness that once defined him in Serie A can be revived in a different footballing landscape.
