Jack Grealish has barely finished explaining why he is missing pre-season, and already a new storyline is circling over his future.

According to reports, Atletico Madrid are weighing up a surprise move for the Manchester City winger in this summer’s window, sensing an opportunity around a player whose stock has dipped but whose reputation among coaches remains stubbornly high.

Inside City, the public stance remains calm. New manager Enzo Maresca stressed that, as things stand, Grealish is still very much part of the club.

“At the moment, he is here. He is a Manchester City player,” Maresca said, outlining a simple principle: if a player belongs to the club, it is his job to coach him. Maresca also highlighted a long-standing relationship with Grealish, dating back to his previous spell at City, praising his “big heart” and character.

The message is clear enough. City are not pushing him out. But Maresca’s closing words – “then we see what happens” – leave space for movement in a summer where big clubs are already reshaping their squads.
