James Garner Injury Update: Everton's Pre-Season Challenge

Everton’s pre-season has taken an early hit, and it concerns one of Sean Dyche’s most reliable performers.

James Garner, a standout in last year’s survival fight, has undergone surgery on a groin problem picked up in the opening days of pre-season. The issue kept him out of the first friendly at Dundee and, after further assessment, specialists advised an operation.

The club moved quickly. The procedure has been completed and described as successful, with Everton confirming the midfielder has already begun his rehabilitation at Finch Farm. The target is clear: a return to first-team training around the opening week of the Premier League season, dependent on how his recovery unfolds.

It is a tight timetable. Everton open the campaign needing stability, and Garner had become central to that. His energy, versatility and composure on the ball were crucial as the Blues fought through a turbulent year on and off the pitch. Losing him, even briefly, strips Dyche of one of his most trusted options in the middle of the park.

The timing is awkward for another reason. Garner’s setback follows confirmation that Idrissa Gueye has left the club after his contract expired this summer. A midfield group already in transition now faces the prospect of starting the season without last year’s most consistent figure in that area.

Recruitment plans were already pointing towards another midfielder. This only sharpens the focus. Everton are understood to be in the market for reinforcements, and Garner’s situation adds a degree of urgency to those conversations as the clock ticks towards the new campaign.

His absence has been felt across the early friendlies. He missed the trip to Dundee and was one of several notable names missing from the squad that faced Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. That game also came too soon for Tyler Dibling, ruled out with what the club described as a “minor knock”, while new signing Hayden Hackney sat out as he continues to be “integrated” into the group following his move from Middlesbrough.

There is better news on that front. Everton expect both Dibling and Hackney to be involved in the friendly at Stoke City on Tuesday, a useful step as Dyche tries to build rhythm and understanding in a squad that has already seen key changes.

Garner, for now, will watch from the gym and treatment room at Finch Farm, working through the early stages of rehab while his teammates build match sharpness. Everton insist his progress is on track and that the plan remains for him to rejoin full training around the start of the league campaign.

Whether the team can navigate those opening weeks without him – and without Gueye – may say plenty about how prepared this squad really is for another demanding season.
