Jeff Bezos Consortium Close to Acquiring One-Third Stake in Liverpool FC
Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is reportedly part of a group that is close to buying about one-third of Premier League club Liverpool FC. The consortium is led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, and also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owners of Liverpool, confirmed last month that they had received an approach from Bhatia's group. An FSG spokesperson told AFP that:
"An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."
Bhatia was recently a shareholder in Championship club Queens Park Rangers.
The Sky News report indicated the deal is nearly finalized to acquire roughly a one-third stake in Liverpool, with an announcement expected soon. Bezos, 62, ranks among the world's wealthiest individuals with an estimated net worth above $280 billion, while Saverin's fortune is valued at $33 billion.
Previously, Bezos explored potential purchases of NFL teams like the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders but chose not to proceed with those deals.
The reported investment would value Liverpool, who have won the English league title 20 times, at around $6 billion. FSG bought the club in 2010 for £300 million ($405 million) and sold a minority stake in 2023 to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity.
Under manager Arne Slot, Liverpool won the Premier League in the 2024/25 season but he was dismissed in May after a challenging campaign.
