Joao Cancelo's Move to Barcelona Edges Closer

Joao Cancelo’s long-running push to stay at Barcelona is edging towards a decisive breakthrough, with fresh reports in Saudi Arabia suggesting a permanent return to Catalonia could be sealed on a free transfer.

The Portuguese full-back is currently tied to Al-Hilal on a deal running until 2027, and the Saudi Pro League club had been holding out for a fee in the region of 10–15 million euros during talks over the summer. Negotiations dragged on, Barcelona watched their budget, and the stalemate lingered.

Now the picture is changing.

Saudi sports newspaper Arriyadiyah, via reporter Hamad Al-Suwaih, claims Al-Hilal are close to agreeing a contract termination with Cancelo. The move would clear the way for him to sign for Barcelona without a transfer fee, a scenario that would suit the Spanish side’s financial reality and the player’s clear preference.

“Al-Hilal nears the signing of contract termination agreement with Cancelo, paving the way for his signing with Spanish club Barcelona,” Al-Suwaih reported, framing it as the final step before the defender’s return to La Liga.

Cancelo has never hidden what he wants. After a hugely influential second loan spell at Camp Nou last season, he made it plain he saw his future in Barcelona colours. He settled quickly, embraced the responsibility in a reshaped back line, and publicly expressed his desire to stay.

If Al-Hilal do rip up his contract, that desire finally meets an opening. With the new La Liga season looming, Barcelona may be about to get their attacking full-back back on a permanent basis — and on terms they can live with.
