Jordan World Cup Setback: Ibrahim Sabra Ruled Out with Injury
Jordan’s first World Cup adventure has suffered a brutal setback before a ball is kicked.
Ibrahim Sabra, the 20-year-old forward tipped as one of the faces of the country’s new generation, has been ruled out of the tournament in North America after tearing ankle ligaments in training, the Jordan Football Association (JFA) announced on Friday.
Scans revealed a tear in the ligaments of his left ankle, the JFA confirmed in a statement on X, ending his hopes of featuring at a World Cup that begins next week. One mistimed moment in training, and a dream is gone.
For Jordan coach Jamal Al‑Salami, it is a significant hit to an attack already facing the steepest stage the country has ever climbed. Sabra, who plays his club football for Lokomotiv Zagreb, had only recently forced his way into the senior national team after eye-catching performances at youth level. His emergence offered pace, movement and a touch of unpredictability in the final third.
Now that option is gone.
Jordan arrive on the global stage riding the momentum of a golden spell that saw them reach the 2023 Asian Cup final, a run that reshaped expectations at home and drew attention abroad. The World Cup in North America was supposed to be the next step in that rise, a chance for the new wave — with Sabra among its brightest — to test itself against elite opposition.
Instead, the squad must quickly adjust its plans in the final days before kick-off.
Drawn in Group J, Jordan open against Austria and Algeria in San Francisco before facing reigning champions Argentina in Dallas, a fixture that had promised a showcase for their fearless young forward. The stage will remain; the cast has changed.
For a nation on the brink of its World Cup debut, the challenge just became harder. The question now is whether this team, forged in recent success, can absorb the loss of a rising star and still make its mark on football’s biggest stage.
