Nottingham Forest Signs Ousmane Diomande for £34.2m

Nottingham Forest have moved decisively in the market, landing highly rated Côte d’Ivoire centre-back Ousmane Diomande from Sporting in a deal reported to be worth around £34.2m.

The 22-year-old has signed a four-year contract at the City Ground, with Forest holding an option for a further year, as the club continues to reshape a defence that has too often lived on the edge in the Premier League.

Forest’s chief football officer, George Syrianos, underlined why the club were prepared to go so hard for him. “He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age. Playing a crucial role in title winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest,” he said, pointing directly to the pedigree Forest believe will translate quickly to England.

Diomande’s route to the Premier League has been anything but straightforward. He began his professional career in Denmark with FC Midtjylland, away from the usual glare that follows emerging defenders from West Africa. His move to Sporting in January 2023 accelerated everything. From there, he racked up 132 appearances in all competitions, anchoring a back line in Lisbon that mixed domestic dominance with deep European runs.

He started both legs of Sporting’s Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal last season, standing up to Premier League opposition in a tie that only increased interest from England. On the international stage, he played the full 90 minutes in Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup group-stage win over Curaçao, another sign of how quickly he has become trusted at the highest level.

Forest are betting that this blend of European know-how and athletic upside will harden their spine for the battles ahead.

Fulham break new ground with Shea Charles deal

Across west London, Fulham have made a statement of their own, completing the signing of Northern Ireland midfielder Shea Charles from Southampton for a reported £30m – a fee that would set a new record for a Northern Ireland international.

Charles, 22, has committed to a five-year contract at Craven Cottage, with Fulham holding an option to extend by another 12 months. It is a long-term investment and a clear sign of trust in a player whose technical profile fits the modern Premier League midfield.

“It’s a great club, with a really good vision – the manager [Alvaro Arbeloa] explained that to me. To be here is a massive privilege,” Charles said after signing. “I hope to really kickstart my Premier League career. At such a good club as well, it’s perfect for me, and hopefully perfect for the fans as well.”

Fulham have often been accused of short-termism in the market. This move points in a different direction: younger, resale value, and a player hungry to prove he belongs at the top level after his time with Southampton.

Chelsea’s Jorgensen heads to Strasbourg

Chelsea, meanwhile, have continued to shuffle their goalkeeping department, sending Filip Jorgensen to Strasbourg on a season-long loan.

The 24-year-old joined Chelsea from Villarreal in 2024 and has made 36 appearances for the club. Last season he started all but one of Chelsea’s Conference League fixtures and featured 12 times in all competitions, operating largely as a cup specialist and rotation option.

Now he heads to Ligue 1, where Strasbourg, who finished eighth last season, can offer him the one thing Chelsea currently cannot: guaranteed minutes in a top-flight environment. For Chelsea, it is another development move in a squad built on depth and long contracts. For Jorgensen, it is a chance to turn promise into permanence.
