Jose Mourinho's Emotional Decision to Reject Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has revealed he had a deal in place to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United – and then walked away from it in tears to return to Chelsea.

The Portuguese coach, speaking in a new Netflix documentary about his career, confirmed years of dressing-room whispers: when he left Real Madrid in 2013, Old Trafford was supposed to be his next stop.

"When I left Real Madrid, I signed to go to Manchester United after Sir Alex," Mourinho says in the series. It was the succession plan many inside the game always assumed Ferguson wanted.

Ferguson, who built his empire across 26 years and 13 Premier League titles, has now backed that up. He recalls sitting Mourinho down and offering him the job.

"I sat him down and explained the situation," Ferguson says. "As far as I was concerned, he was accepting. And then, within hours, it changed."

Those hours reshaped the recent history of two of England’s biggest clubs.

United turned instead to David Moyes, the Everton manager Ferguson publicly endorsed as his hand‑picked successor. The club unfurled a banner at the Stretford End branding Moyes "The Chosen One". It would become an awkward monument to a failed experiment.

Mourinho’s U-turn came from a different kind of loyalty. Chelsea called. The pull of Stamford Bridge, where he had been the charismatic architect of their 2005 and 2006 Premier League titles, proved stronger than the lure of following the greatest manager in United’s history.

Ferguson remembers the phone call that flipped the script.

"One night, he phoned me and he was crying," Ferguson says. "He said: 'Alex, I can't take it. I've given my word to Chelsea and I'm not going to break my word.'

The legendary United manager understood the explanation. It did not soften the blow.

"The reason he gave to me I could understand," he adds. "But I was disappointed."

For Mourinho, it was a tug-of-war between football’s grandest stage and a place he considered home.

He admits he was "very flattered" to be offered the chance to replace Ferguson, describing Manchester United as a club with "incredible appeal". Yet he draws a sharp line between his profession and his passion.

"But one thing is love for football, another thing is love for a certain club," he says. "I think this is more powerful than love for football and, fundamentally, after Real Madrid I needed to feel that I'm loved."

So he chose Chelsea. Head over history. Heart over legacy.

"For me to lose the chance to be the coach to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson was dramatic," he concedes. "But I don't regret it because it was a decision that I made with my heart."

The consequences were brutal for United. While Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge in 2013 and collected another Premier League title and a League Cup, Moyes lasted just 10 months at Old Trafford before being sacked, his reign swallowed by the shadow of Ferguson’s era and the weight of that banner.

United would circle back to Mourinho eventually. In 2016, after Louis van Gaal’s departure, the club finally got their man. The timing, though, was different. So was the context.

Across two and a half intense, combustible years, Mourinho delivered the League Cup and the Europa League, trophies that briefly restored a sense of authority to a club still searching for its post-Ferguson identity. The relationship ended in December 2018, results collapsing and the familiar storm clouds gathering.

The revelation from both men now adds a new layer to that entire decade: United once had Mourinho lined up to walk straight into Ferguson’s chair, at the height of his power, with the club still on top of the mountain.

Instead, he chose the blue corner of London and a love he felt he could not betray. United chose a different path. And the game is still living with the aftershocks.
