Juventus Pursues Zirkzee as Manchester United Signals Exit

Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United chapter already feels like it’s edging towards its final pages. The Dutch forward, once billed as a key part of the club’s attacking rebuild, is now at the centre of a summer scramble, with Juventus leading the chase for his signature.

According to The Athletic, United are prepared to sell, and Zirkzee is weighing up his options after a bruising spell in English football. Two unnamed Premier League clubs have sounded out his camp, testing the waters on a deal, while Ajax also checked in to gauge United’s stance. The Dutch giants, though, are unlikely to go any further after bringing in Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare, moves that have effectively closed that door.

So the spotlight swings to Turin. Juventus are pushing hard. The Italian side are working on a loan agreement and, crucially, Zirkzee is understood to have given the green light to a return to Serie A. It is familiar territory for him, and that matters. In Italy, he looked like a forward on the rise; in England, he has too often looked like a player searching for himself.

United paid £36.5 million to prise him from Bologna in 2024, a fee that carried all the weight of expectation after his standout 2023–24 campaign in Serie A. He arrived at Old Trafford as a technically gifted, modern centre-forward, expected to knit attacks together and grow into a leading role.

The reality has been far harsher. The Premier League’s intensity has gripped him and not let go. Across the past two seasons, Zirkzee has managed just 19 starts in 56 league appearances, returning only five goals. Those numbers tell their own story: flashes of promise, never quite sustained; cameos instead of command performances.

Yet the talent has not vanished. It resurfaced in pre-season, when Zirkzee produced a superb goal in a strong display against Rosenborg, a reminder of the touch, movement and finishing that persuaded United to invest so heavily in the first place. It was the kind of moment that makes coaches and directors hesitate before cutting ties.

But hesitation is giving way to pragmatism. United are open to a deal. Juventus see opportunity. Zirkzee, still only in the early stages of his career, stands at a familiar crossroads for a young forward whose potential has outpaced his Premier League impact.

A return to Serie A could revive the player who lit up Bologna. The question now is whether Old Trafford has already seen the best of Joshua Zirkzee in a United shirt – and whether his real story will be written somewhere else.
