Manchester United Set for Minor Windfall from Kambwala Transfer
Manchester United are set for a minor windfall as former defender Willy Kambwala prepares to leave Villarreal before the transfer deadline.
Italian side Como are leading the race for the 19-year-old, edging ahead of La Liga outfit Osasuna in the battle for his signature. The move itself is not expected to command a major fee, but it will still trigger a sell-on clause United inserted when they sanctioned his exit in 2024.
At the time, Villarreal agreed a package worth €5.5 million plus a possible €6m in add-ons to take Kambwala from Old Trafford. United protected their position heavily in that deal: a buy-back option, matching rights for three years and what club sources described as a “sizeable” sell-on clause.
The reality now is that Villarreal are not set to cash in for anything like that level, which naturally limits what United will receive. Even so, it’s another example of the club’s new transfer strategy quietly going to work in the background.
This kind of clause was used occasionally in the past, but it has become standard practice since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos took charge of football operations. United now push hard to retain some form of future value in almost every outgoing deal, especially with younger players.
Recent sales underline the shift. Tyler Fredricson’s move to Lausanne-Sport included a “high percentage” sell-on clause and a buy-back option. Radek Vitek’s transfer to Middlesbrough carried a buy-back clause, matching rights and a sell-on clause of up to 35 per cent.
Even Ethan Williams’ switch to Peterborough last week followed the same template: a 50 per cent sell-on clause, plus buy-back and matching rights.
Kambwala’s move to Como might not move the financial needle on its own. But it fits a growing pattern at Old Trafford – United no longer simply let prospects walk away. They make sure the door is never completely closed, and the till is never completely silent.
