Karim Adeyemi Joins Barcelona: First Day on the Pitch

The wait is over. After more than a week in limbo, Karim Adeyemi has at last traded uncertainty for grass, boots and ball under Hansi Flick at FC Barcelona.

The German winger had been in the city since last week, watching the clock while the final administrative details of his move were pushed over the line. He could meet his new teammates, walk through the facilities, feel the buzz around the club – but not train with the group. For a 24-year-old built on speed and instinct, it was a strange kind of standstill.

That ended on Thursday. Barcelona officially unveiled Adeyemi, posed him alongside president Joan Laporta for the customary photographs, and sent him out in front of the media as a Barça player for the first time. The formality was done. The football could start.

First real day at work

This morning, just before 8:45 a.m., Adeyemi arrived at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper with a different status. No longer a guest hovering on the edges of the group, but a fully registered member of Flick’s squad.

He already knew the faces in the dressing room from his days waiting around Barcelona, but this time he joined them on the grass. Full training kit, full session, no caveats. A first real taste of Flick’s methods, and the start of the physical build-up he needs before the new season.

The session marked the beginning of a process rather than a shortcut. Adeyemi’s game is built on explosive runs and repeated sprints; that kind of weapon only works if the legs are ready.

Europa friendly comes too soon

So the temptation to throw him straight into a game will be resisted. Despite completing his first workout, Adeyemi is not expected to feature in Barcelona’s behind-closed-doors friendly against CE Europa on Friday evening, as reported by SPORT.

He has only one session under Flick. One. Pushing him into a match now, even a low-key one, would be haste for the sake of it. With more important tests around the corner, Barcelona are choosing patience.

That means Adeyemi is set to join the list of absentees for the Europa game, alongside Ronald Araújo, Alejandro Balde and Hafiz Gariba.

England tour earmarked for his debut

The real stage for his first minutes should come in England. With a trip across the Channel approaching, Barcelona plan to give the attacker his chance to make a first on-pitch impression when they face Birmingham City in a pre-season friendly on July 31.

That fixture, with a bit more training in his legs and a clearer grasp of Flick’s demands, looks a far more natural launch point. Days later, the Blaugrana will also meet Preston North End in another behind-closed-doors encounter, a second window for Adeyemi to push his case and carve out a role before the season starts.

Two games, close together, both away from the glare of a packed Camp Nou. Ideal conditions for a new signing to find his rhythm.

Fitness puzzles around him

While Adeyemi took his first steps with the group, Friday’s morning session also underlined the physical questions Flick still has to solve. Balde continued to work away from the main squad, still on an individual programme. Araújo did the same, edging forward in his recovery as he targets full fitness.

Those absences, and Adeyemi’s delayed debut, keep the picture incomplete for now. But the winger is finally on the pitch, finally in Flick’s hands.

The waiting is done. The real battle for a place in this Barcelona side starts on English soil at the end of the month.
