La Liga 2026-27 Predictions: Title Contenders, Top Scorer, Key Matches and More
Barcelona have claimed the last two La Liga championships and three of the past four seasons. Meanwhile, Real Madrid has brought back Jose Mourinho and made significant signings to rebuild their squad and reclaim the top spot.
Under coach Hansi Flick, Barcelona secured league titles with four and eight-point leads over Real Madrid in the previous two seasons. Despite Madrid's efforts in the transfer market, Mourinho’s tactical approach remains unproven at this level, making it tough to bet on Real overtaking their rivals.
Barcelona’s recent transfer window hasn’t been remarkable, but they seem poised to make more moves before it closes. Their youthful squad looks set to keep them at the league’s summit.
Predicted champion: Barcelona
Projected La Liga Standings 2026-27
- Champions League spots: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Athletic Club, Villarreal
- Other European qualification: Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad
After Barcelona, the usual suspects Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid should secure Champions League places comfortably. If Barcelona slips, they’ll likely still qualify easily.
Spain is expected to keep its five Champions League spots due to strong performances in Europe recently. Villarreal might drop slightly from last season’s third place but will remain competitive.
Athletic Club underperformed last season, finishing 12th despite solid underlying numbers. Injuries hampered their goal-scoring, but they’re expected to bounce back and challenge for Europe without extra cup commitments.
Real Betis and Celta Vigo impressed last year and should stay in the mix. Real Sociedad, who won the Copa del Rey, could make a strong push after a solid campaign that faded late.
Golden Boot Prediction
Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid has dominated the scoring charts even as the team failed to win major trophies over the last two seasons. This dominance looks set to continue and possibly grow with the arrival of Yan Diomande, who adds attacking creativity to support Mbappe.
Issues with Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. both occupying the left wing have caused problems for Real Madrid overall, but it hasn’t hurt Mbappe’s goal count. Expect him to lead the scoring race again.
Golden Boot winner: Kylian Mbappe
Key Matches to Watch in 2026-27
El Clasico Fixtures
- October 25, 2026: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid (Camp Nou)
- May 9, 2027: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona (Santiago Bernabeu)
Last season, both teams won their home El Clasico matches, with Barcelona also taking the Supercopa final on neutral ground. The coming season’s clashes will likely be just as intense and evenly split, possibly leaving the title decision to other matches. The May fixture could be decisive if the title race remains tight.
Madrid Derby
- September 20, 2026: Atletico Madrid vs. Real Madrid (Metropolitano)
- April 4, 2027: Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid (Santiago Bernabeu)
Real Madrid have edged Atletico in recent years but struggle when playing at the Metropolitano. Unless Mourinho finds a way to crack Atletico’s fortress, these matches will likely be split, with Madrid having the advantage only on neutral grounds.
Basque Derby
- November 1, 2026: Athletic Club vs. Real Sociedad (San Mames Stadium)
- May 2, 2027: Real Sociedad vs. Athletic Club (Reale Arena)
Both Basque clubs are regular top-half contenders, making this derby one of the season’s more exciting rivalries. Last season, Real Sociedad had the upper hand in league and Copa del Rey matches, winning the cup and earning European qualification. Athletic Club is expected to rebound and claim some victories in this rivalry.
Catalan Derby
- January 3, 2027: Espanyol vs. Barcelona (RCDE Stadium)
- April 18, 2027: Barcelona vs. Espanyol (Camp Nou)
Barcelona have long dominated Espanyol, including an undefeated La Liga streak since 2009 and a win over them in 2018 Copa del Rey. This season looks unlikely to change that trend.
