The Premier League’s biggest recruiters know exactly where the next wave of midfield talent is coming from, and this summer the spotlight has swung firmly onto Monaco’s Lamine Camara.

At 22, the Senegal international has become the subject of a fierce battle between four English clubs, with Manchester United and Liverpool now jostling for position alongside Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest.

From Metz to Monaco – and straight to the top shelf

Monaco paid around €15m to prise Camara from FC Metz in July 2024. It already looks a bargain.

Since arriving in the Principality, the all-action midfielder has racked up 71 appearances, driving himself into the heart of Adi Hütter’s side and into any serious scout’s notebook. Ligue 1 has seen plenty of young midfielders come and go, but few have combined Camara’s blend of aggression, athleticism and composure on the ball.

He doesn’t just cover ground. He tears through it.

Camara relishes tackles, surges box to box, and has the confidence to dribble through pressure and create in the final third. That profile has made him one of the most intriguing young midfielders in France – and a priority target for clubs who want more bite and energy in the middle of the pitch.

World Cup platform, Premier League attention

Senegal already trust him on the biggest stage. Camara started all four of their World Cup matches, anchoring the midfield until their painful round-of-32 exit to Belgium. That tournament confirmed what Monaco already knew: this is a player built for high-intensity football.

He returned from international duty and slotted straight back into club life, most recently helping Monaco edge Liverpool 3-2 in a pre-season friendly on Sunday. One game does not dictate a transfer window, but it certainly sharpened English interest in a player who had just outworked and outplayed parts of Liverpool’s midfield in real time.

The timing could hardly be better for Camara. Or worse for Monaco.

Four clubs, one midfielder, and a rising price

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, the race has escalated quickly. Manchester United, Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest are all pushing to bring Camara to England, with the competition already driving his price upwards.

Monaco’s stance is clear: they want major money.

Foot Mercato report that the Ligue 1 side value Camara at around €50m (£43m). Other sources in France go a step further, claiming Monaco are actually holding out for closer to €60m (£51m) and have already turned down a €50m offer from Palace.

That detail matters. It underlines just how serious Palace are and how far “smaller” Premier League clubs are now willing to go financially to land top-tier talent before the giants move.

Palace have already submitted a concrete bid. Forest, for their part, are said to be on the verge of lodging an official offer of their own in the coming days. The London club have made the first real move; Forest are readying the next.

United and Liverpool, for now, are circling.

United’s rebuild and a missing piece

At Old Trafford, the midfield rebuild is well underway. United have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer, but they want a third addition to complete the reshaping of Erik ten Hag’s engine room.

Some of their other targets are slipping away. Alex Scott looks unlikely. Aurelien Tchouameni is drifting out of reach. That has forced United to widen the net, with names such as Sander Berge, Tyler Adams and Carlos Baleba all under consideration.

Camara, though, offers something slightly different. He is not yet a marquee name, but he carries top-class potential and the kind of two-way profile United have lacked for years: someone who can break up play, carry the ball, and still influence the game in the final third.

If United want a midfielder who can change the tempo of matches rather than simply manage them, Camara fits the bill. The question is whether they are prepared to match Monaco’s demands and outbid clubs who have already put money on the table.

Liverpool’s need for energy

Across the North West, Liverpool’s need is just as obvious.

Their midfield has been crying out for fresh legs and renewed intensity, and Camara’s game screams both. He would bring aggression without losing control, energy without sacrificing technique.

Liverpool are tracking him closely and remain firmly “in the hunt”, having expressed interest earlier this year and continued to monitor his situation. The fit is easy to picture: Camara as the driving force in a revamped midfield, freeing Alexis Mac Allister to play higher and sharper after a difficult campaign.

There is also the matter of Curtis Jones. Inter Milan are circling the Liverpool academy product, and if he moves on, a slot opens up in Jürgen Klopp’s rotation. Camara would not be a like-for-like replacement in style, but he would offer something Liverpool badly need – a relentless, box-to-box presence who can set the tone in big games.

Power, potential and a looming decision

Monaco hold the cards for now, but the pressure is building. A 22-year-old World Cup starter, already proven in Ligue 1 and now shining in front of Premier League eyes, is not going to stay under the radar for long.

Palace have moved first. Forest are ready to follow. United and Liverpool are hovering, weighing up whether to turn interest into a bid that tests Monaco’s resolve.

The price is high. The competition is real. The upside, for whoever wins this race, could define their midfield for years.
