Liverpool Prepared to Abandon Barcola Deal as Arsenal Watches

Liverpool’s search for a successor to Mohamed Salah has hit a hard stop in Paris, with the club prepared to abandon their pursuit of Bradley Barcola rather than bow to Paris Saint-Germain’s towering demands.

Salah’s surprise move to Trabzonspor on a free last week ripped a hole in Andoni Iraola’s attack. Barcola, dynamic and direct, was quickly identified as a priority target to help patch it. Talks have been running for weeks. Progress has not.

PSG have drawn a line in the sand at around £145million. Liverpool will not cross it. The French champions are refusing to soften their stance, even with Barcola understood to be keen on the switch in search of greater playing time.

So the negotiations drag, deadline day looms three weeks away, and Liverpool’s patience is running out. The club are now ready to step back from the table and move on to other options to strengthen what is seen as a threadbare squad under Iraola.

One of those alternatives is already in the same dressing room as Barcola. Ibrahim Mbaye, just 18, has emerged on Liverpool’s radar as a possible solution if the stalemate with PSG cannot be broken.

Liverpool’s willingness to walk away does not just reshape their own plans. It opens a door for a rival.

Arsenal, still hunting a marquee addition after failing to land Vinicius Junior, are watching the Barcola situation closely. Vinicius chose to stay at Real Madrid on a new long-term deal, forcing the Gunners to look elsewhere for the kind of headline signing that can tilt a title race.

They have already moved on the left flank by bringing in Christos Tzolis, yet interest in Barcola remains. The calculation is simple: if Liverpool step aside, the path to negotiations with PSG becomes clearer for Mikel Arteta’s side.

For now, Arsenal wait. They are monitoring, quietly, ready to see whether Liverpool’s stance hardens into a definitive exit from the talks.

Arteta wants more firepower

Arteta has not hidden his intentions for the rest of the window. Asked about further business, he was blunt: “Well, that's what we're trying to do. If we have the right player in the market to make us much better, we are very looking forward to that."

Arsenal have already made a major midfield investment, paying £75m to bring in Bruno Guimaraes last week. The focus now is on the forward line, where Arteta is pushing for more options and more goals.
