Liverpool's Record-Breaking Bid for Bradley Barcola as Salah Successor

Liverpool have finally put their cards on the table. After weeks of probing and posturing, the club have lodged a huge offer to prise Bradley Barcola away from Paris Saint-Germain, accelerating their search for a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah.

The bid is enormous: €105m plus €15m in bonuses, according to journalist Achille Ashe. If PSG accept, it would represent a record-breaking sale for the French champions and a defining moment of Liverpool’s summer.

This is not a window the club can afford to drift through. While rivals have moved early and aggressively, Liverpool’s only completed deals so far are for Osasuna’s Victor Munoz and Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet. Solid business, but not the sort that shifts the balance of power in the Premier League.

At Anfield, the outgoings have hurt. Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate and Salah have all departed on free transfers, stripping the squad of experience, leadership and, in Salah’s case, world-class end product. Replacing that volume of quality in one summer is a brutal task. Replacing Salah is something else entirely.

For weeks, RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande sat at the top of Liverpool’s attacking shortlist. He was the chosen man to inherit Salah’s role and responsibility. Then Real Madrid stepped in. Diomande is now set to move to the Bernabeu, and Liverpool have been forced to pivot.

That pivot has led them straight to Barcola.

The 21-year-old France international has long been admired at Anfield. Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reported on Monday that Liverpool had reached an “agreement in principle” over personal terms with the winger, with a contract running until 2032 and a “top salary” on the table. For a club that rarely throws around decade-long planning lightly, that level of commitment underlines how central they see Barcola to their next era.

The problem has always been PSG’s price.

Ben Jacobs, a journalist with close insight into the deal, revealed that Liverpool view the French club’s initial €170m valuation as “inflated and unrealistic”. Talks between the clubs, he said, have so far been only preliminary, with formal negotiations yet to fully kick into gear – but expected to do so.

The new €120m package is Liverpool’s answer to that stand-off. It doesn’t meet PSG’s starting demand, but it drags the conversation into a far more serious zone.

Liverpool’s stance is clear. They tried to sign Barcola last summer when he was valued at around €85m and, as Jacobs reported, have “no intention” of paying double that figure now. What has changed is not their admiration for the player, but the market around him.

PSG’s position has been shaped by this summer’s extraordinary fees elsewhere, including Elliot Anderson’s £116m move and Morgan Rogers’ £117m switch. Those deals have emboldened the French champions, who see Barcola’s age, profile and contract situation as leverage in a hyper-inflated market.

Liverpool are betting on a different kind of leverage.

Inside the club, there is a belief that Barcola’s desire to leave and the fact he has only two years remaining on his contract weaken PSG’s hand. He has no intention of signing an extension, according to reports, and Liverpool feel that if an agreement is not reached in this window, PSG risk being forced into a far cheaper sale in 2027.

That looming cliff edge matters. A record bid now, or a cut-price exit later. PSG’s hierarchy must decide which risk they can live with.

For Liverpool, the calculation is brutal but simple. They need a wide forward capable of carrying a huge creative and scoring load, someone with the personality to handle Anfield’s expectation and the tactical intelligence to slot into an evolving attack. Barcola, with his pace, directness and versatility across the frontline, fits the blueprint.

The Merseyside club have already explored alternative routes. They have looked across the division, including at an Everton star as a possible Plan B, while other targets weigh up moves to different clubs. But Barcola has remained the leading name on their list. This is the one they want.

Now the offer is on PSG’s desk: €105m guaranteed, €15m in bonuses. Ashe reports that the proposal is “under review by the Parisian management” and that “the departure of the French international is becoming more and more likely”. The bid is edging closer to what PSG have been asking for, and negotiations are ongoing.

Liverpool have made their move. The question now is whether PSG blink, or hold out for a number that even in this warped market might finally make a club walk away.
