Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola Hits Snag Over PSG's Price Tag

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has hit a familiar snag: Paris Saint-Germain’s price tag.

For weeks, Liverpool have been pushing hard for the 21-year-old winger, identified as a leading candidate to help fill the vast attacking void left by Mohamed Salah’s departure. The player is understood to be open to the move. Personal terms are not seen as an obstacle. The problem lies firmly between the two clubs.

Big target, bigger gap

Sky Sports reporters Amar Mehta and Vinny O’Connor revealed on Friday evening that while preliminary talks between Liverpool and PSG have taken place, there remains a “significant gap” in their valuations of Barcola. PSG’s stance on the fee is described as making the deal “difficult to complete”.

That line matters, because the numbers being mentioned around the French champions’ demands are eye-watering. Figures from €145m to €170m (£125m-£145m) have been floated, a level that would smash Liverpool’s transfer record and place Barcola among the most expensive players in history.

Liverpool, as things stand, are not prepared to go that far.

‘Deal in principle’ talk under the microscope

Into that tense backdrop came a report from Liverpool-focused outlet DaveOCKOP, claiming an agreement in principle had been reached between the clubs. Their story suggested a fee of around €128m (£110m), with add-ons described as more achievable than previously proposed clauses, and reiterated that Barcola’s preference is to join Liverpool and that he is not expected to sign a new deal with the European champions.

The player’s desire to move to Anfield aligns with what has been consistently reported: Barcola is a top Liverpool target and wants the switch. That much is not in dispute.

The notion that a deal is already in place is.

No major outlet has backed up the claim of an agreement, and the latest from Sky Sports’ insiders cuts directly against it, stressing the gap in valuation rather than a breakthrough.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has also moved to cool talk of a done deal, stating that negotiations are ongoing between Liverpool and PSG but “nothing is agreed or even at final stages as of now”. He again underlined that Barcola wants the move and that Liverpool see him as a priority, yet confirmed there has been “no breakthrough in talks yet”.

Liverpool’s dilemma

Liverpool’s need for a high-calibre wide forward is obvious. Several alternative options to replace Salah have already slipped away, narrowing the market and increasing the pressure on this pursuit. Barcola, with his age, profile and ceiling, fits the club’s long-term model.

But PSG are under no obligation to compromise. They hold a valuable asset, under contract, at a time when elite attacking talent is scarce. Their valuation reflects that leverage, and they have shown in previous windows that they are prepared to dig in.

For Liverpool to land their man, the message is clear: they will have to move well beyond their current position. The question now is whether they are willing to step into that financial territory for a player still at the start of his career, or whether they walk away and risk watching a prime Salah successor slip from their grasp.
