Liverpool Eye Bradley Barcola Amid PSG's £145m Valuation

Liverpool have opened the door on what would be one of the most audacious moves of the window, holding preliminary talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola – but the numbers on the table are miles apart.

The Champions League holders value the 23-year-old at around £145m, a figure that currently leaves Liverpool staring at a steep wall rather than a negotiable gap. At that price, any deal is stuck in neutral. For now.

Club officials have also spoken to Barcola’s representatives, a sign this is more than a passing enquiry. The France international, under contract at PSG for another two years, has already made it clear he will not be signing an extension, frustrated by his limited game time in Paris. A move to Anfield appeals to him. The project, the stage, the vacancy on the wing – it all fits.

The problem is the fee. PSG paid roughly £40m to prise him from Lyon in the summer of 2023 and are in no rush to cash in cheaply on a player they see as part of their elite core. The key to unlocking the deal is simple and brutal: the French champions must blink first on the valuation.

Iraola’s wide rebuild after Salah

Andoni Iraola has made no secret of how he wants his Liverpool side to look. His teams at Bournemouth and Rayo Vallecano ran on the fuel of relentless wingers – pace, aggression, work-rate, constant pressing. Wide players did not decorate those sides; they drove them.

With Mohamed Salah gone, that area of the squad has become the defining theme of Iraola’s first window on Merseyside. Liverpool plan to emerge from this market with five wingers, one of them a younger project player to mould over time.

That’s where the parallel track to Barcola comes in.

Liverpool have also held preliminary talks over Ibrahim Mbaye, the 18-year-old PSG winger who prefers to operate off the right. He is believed to be keen on a switch to Anfield, and crucially, the pursuit of Mbaye is completely independent of any move for Barcola.

The club are exploring a scenario where Mbaye arrives as a developmental signing alongside a more established wide forward. It is not one or the other. It could be both.

A serial winner in PSG’s hands

Barcola’s profile explains why Liverpool are pushing at what looks like a closed door. In the last two years, he has collected nine major trophies, including two Champions League titles. That haul underlines the calibre of player Iraola wants to plug into his new attacking structure.

Drop that kind of experience and winning habit into a high-intensity system and he instantly becomes more than just another winger. He becomes a reference point.

PSG, though, are not behaving like a club preparing to usher him out. They have already moved on three forwards this summer – Goncalo Ramos, Randal Kolo Muani and Kang-In Lee – which only strengthens their desire to keep hold of Barcola. Internally, he is not seen as expendable.

That stance has not stopped other heavyweights circling. Arsenal, still searching for a marquee wide addition after missing out on Vinicius Junior when he extended his Real Madrid contract, also hold an interest in Barcola. They are watching the situation closely, but the same brick wall of PSG’s valuation stands in their way.

Akliouche in, but not as a replacement

On Thursday, PSG added another winger, Magnes Akliouche, in a £42.8m move from Monaco. Liverpool had tracked the France international, yet once PSG entered the race, the player’s mind was made up. Raised in the Paris region, Akliouche wanted the move to the capital.

PSG are also in advanced talks with Ajax over winger Mika Godts, another attacking piece in Luis Enrique’s evolving squad.

On the surface, Akliouche and a possible Godts deal might look like a softening of PSG’s position on Barcola. Fresh wide players in, one star winger out – the usual transfer logic. Inside the club, that logic does not apply. Neither Akliouche nor Godts is viewed as a direct replacement. The intention in Paris remains to keep Barcola and build around him, not sell him to fund the next phase.

So the situation is stark. Liverpool like Barcola, have spoken to PSG, have spoken to the player’s camp, and know he is attracted to the idea of Anfield. They are also working on Mbaye and potentially another senior winger as Iraola reshapes his attack.

But everything, absolutely everything, hinges on one question: will PSG climb down from that £145m valuation before the window shuts, or will Liverpool be forced to build their new era out wide without the winger who fits it so perfectly on paper?
