Liverpool’s Pursuit of Bradley Barcola Hits Bayern Munich Roadblock

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has run straight into one of European football’s biggest brick walls: Bayern Munich and a possible Real Madrid chain reaction.

What started as a bold Anfield move for Paris Saint-Germain’s gifted winger is turning into a high-stakes waiting game, with three giants circling the same patch of grass.

Liverpool’s “top, top, top” winger target

Liverpool’s interest in Barcola is no longer a whisper on the rumour mill. On July 9, transfer reporter Graeme Bailey detailed how strongly the club are pushing for the 21-year-old this summer, with the player himself understood to have informed PSG he wants out.

PSG are resisting. The French champions want to keep the France international and are ready to open talks over a new contract. They also know exactly what they have on their hands – a winger they now value at a minimum of €150m (£128m, $170.5m).

That hasn’t put Liverpool off the idea. It might, however, decide whether they can actually pull it off.

Fabrizio Romano has been adamant about where Barcola sits on Liverpool’s shortlist. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he stressed that nothing has changed for months: Barcola is Liverpool’s number one target for the winger position, the player they “love”, the one they remain “super keen” to sign. Romano also underlined that Barcelona are not part of this story, pointing out that Jorge Mendes is not Barcola’s agent and has no involvement.

The desire is clear. The question is whether the finances and timing can ever line up.

Bayern enter the frame – but only on one condition

Just as Liverpool’s interest started to feel established, another heavyweight stepped into the light.

In Germany, Bild journalist Christian Falk has revealed that Bayern Munich have Barcola on their shortlist as a potential replacement for Michael Olise. The key word is “replacement”.

Real Madrid want Olise. Florentino Perez is personally keen on taking the winger to the Bernabeu, and if Bayern are pushed into a sale, Vincent Kompany’s side already have a name in mind: Bradley Barcola, Olise’s international team-mate.

Falk, writing on his CFBayernInsider platform, stated that Barcola is “one of the names on the shortlist at Bayern Munich” if Olise goes. He added that Bayern have admired Barcola for some time, looking at him last summer and even the year before as a “very interesting player” for the club.

Right now, though, there is “no chance” of Bayern landing him. The same barrier that looms over Liverpool’s bid stands in front of them: PSG’s stance and a price tag hovering around €150m.

Contracts, clocks and a looming decision

This saga may not be decided in this window at all. It might be next summer when the real battle starts.

Falk points out a crucial detail: Barcola’s contract at PSG runs to 2028 – one year less than Olise’s deal at Bayern. That difference could define the market.

If Barcola is not sold this summer – to Liverpool or any other club willing to meet PSG’s demands – and if he remains unsettled, the landscape changes in 12 months. With one year less on his contract, PSG will feel the pressure that every club eventually faces with a valuable, restless asset.

Bayern, for their part, do not want to sell Olise this summer. But they also know they must think ahead. If Olise does not sign a new contract in Munich and his situation drifts, the German champions will need a replacement plan ready.

Barcola fits that plan. Falk even suggests he would be an ideal fit at Bayern, not only stylistically but structurally: his current gross salary at PSG, around €7m–8m, is roughly half of what Olise earns in Bavaria. For an elite club constantly juggling wage levels and squad balance, that matters.

Liverpool’s window, Bayern’s insurance, PSG’s gamble

So the picture is this: Liverpool want Barcola now. PSG want to keep him and pay him. Bayern see him as a future solution if Real Madrid prise Olise away. The player has made it known he wants to leave.

Someone will have to blink.

If Liverpool cannot or will not reach the €150m region this summer, they may need to hope PSG’s resolve softens over time – or that Barcola’s contract situation forces a rethink in Paris. If Bayern are eventually dragged into selling Olise, they will be waiting, watching Barcola’s case develop, ready to move if the numbers and timing fall their way.

For the moment, Barcola is still a PSG player with a giant price tag and a growing list of admirers. Liverpool’s “top, top, top” target has become a piece on a much larger European chessboard.

The next move might not be made on Merseyside at all. It could come from Madrid.
