Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola: A Decisive Phase

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola, a saga that has simmered all summer, is edging towards a decisive phase – and, for once in this window, most of the signs are pointing their way.

This has not been a smooth market for the club. Targets have slipped away: Yan Diomande heading towards Real Madrid, Michael Olise staying put. The frustration has been real. Yet amid that, the chase for Barcola has hardened from vague interest into a full-scale push, and the landscape around the deal is beginning to tilt in Liverpool’s favour.

Barcola wants Liverpool – and has told PSG he’s done

The first and most important element is clear: Barcola wants the move.

Reports in France say the winger has already given Liverpool his word and agreed contractual terms. He has also informed Paris Saint-Germain that he does not intend to extend his current deal beyond 2028. That stance changes the dynamic completely. PSG still hold the power of a long contract, but they now know they are dealing with a player looking for the exit.

For Liverpool, who have been crying out for another winger, that buy-in is non-negotiable. They are not simply trying to tempt a player away from a comfortable situation; they are aligning with someone who has already mentally stepped towards Anfield.

Arsenal have been in the conversation too, yet the indication is that Barcola’s preference is Liverpool. In a market where elite attacking talent is scarce and fiercely contested, that alone is a significant win.

A brutal asking price – but room to move

The obstacle, as ever, is the fee.

PSG are said to want around £145m, or €150m excluding bonuses. Liverpool’s stance is far lower – closer to £100m, roughly €120m. On paper, that is a chasm.

Loïc Tanzi of L’Équipe, though, believes a compromise is likely. He has gone as far as to say he is “inclined to say yes” when asked if Liverpool will get the deal done, even while acknowledging the gap between the clubs’ positions.

The leverage is building. Barcola has made his intentions clear. Liverpool have stepped up their offer. And crucially, PSG are now moving to close a deal for his replacement.

PSG move for Akliouche – a key domino falls

The pressure finally told in Paris. Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Maghnes Akliouche is already in the city to complete his move from AS Monaco. The deal is worth around €50m and has been agreed since last week, with formalities being wrapped up at the club.

PSG do not sign a €50m winger to sit and watch. They sign him to play.

Once Akliouche is through the door, the French champions will have less sporting need – and potentially more financial incentive – to soften their stance on Barcola. If they also manage to bring in a striker, as they hope, the conditions for negotiation become even more favourable for Liverpool. Two attacking signings would give PSG cover, options, and a little less reason to cling to their valuation quite so fiercely.

That is exactly the scenario Tanzi pointed to: if Paris secure a winger and a striker, their position “will surely be able to move closer” to Liverpool’s.

No Bayern hijack – for now

One of the great modern transfer fears is the late hijack. Liverpool know that as well as anyone. This time, the threat from Bavaria appears to be off the table.

German journalist Christian Falk has made it clear that Bayern Munich will not move for Barcola this summer. The reason is blunt: he is too expensive for them in this window.

For Liverpool, that removes a heavyweight rival from the immediate equation. Bayern like the player. They see him as the number one option to replace Michael Olise in the future if the Frenchman eventually leaves. But that is a conversation for another year.

If Barcola stays in Paris for another season, Bayern could come back into play. If he signs for Liverpool now, that door slams shut for them.

Falk underlined the urgency on Merseyside. With Diomande heading to Real Madrid and Olise not moving this summer, Liverpool “really need a player like Barcola now”. Bayern, he suggested, can afford to wait. Liverpool cannot.

Liverpool’s window at a crossroads

Strip away the noise and three pillars now support Liverpool’s growing confidence.

Barcola has chosen them and told PSG he wants out. PSG are closing a €50m deal for Akliouche and still chasing a striker, making a major sale more palatable. Bayern, the looming giant in so many transfer stories, are standing down this summer.

The numbers still need to meet. Liverpool do not want to go above €120m. PSG are publicly holding out for €150m. Somewhere between those figures, a season – and perhaps a new phase of Liverpool’s attack – hangs in the balance.

The club has already taken too many punches in this window. Barcola would change the mood entirely. The question now is simple: will Liverpool push that bit further, and will PSG blink first?
