Liverpool Faces Uncertainty as Iraola Emerges as Managerial Favorite
Liverpool’s season was supposed to be about defending a title. Instead, it is drifting into something far more uncertain: a club quietly bracing for the possibility of another managerial reset.
Arne Slot is still in the dugout and still preparing for Brentford on Sunday, but the conversation around him has shifted. A disappointing title defence has opened the door to speculation, and the betting markets have raced straight through it.
At the front of that charge is Andoni Iraola.
Iraola the Favourite in a Shifting Landscape
William Hill now makes the Bournemouth manager the clear favourite to take over at Anfield if Slot goes. Iraola is priced at 4/7, well ahead of Sebastian Hoeness and Luis Enrique at 6/1, Julian Nagelsmann at 13/2 and, intriguingly, Jurgen Klopp at 9/1.
The numbers echo what has been reported elsewhere. FootMercato claims Iraola would be Liverpool’s first choice should the club decide to change direction. He is leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season after guiding them into Europe for the first time in their history, a landmark achievement that has not gone unnoticed on Merseyside.
Liverpool are said to admire his aggressive, front-foot style. The phrase coming out of France is that he “ticks all the boxes”. High energy. Attacking football. A track record of improving players. It is the sort of profile that fits the club’s recent identity, even as the current campaign has faltered.
For now, Slot stays. But the market, and the mood, suggest the debate is only just beginning.
Guardiola, Carrick and the New Order Forming Around Liverpool
This is not happening in isolation. The last half-hour of news has redrawn the managerial map around Liverpool.
Manchester City have confirmed that Pep Guardiola will leave at the end of the season. The man who has defined the era is walking away, with former Chelsea and Leicester manager Enzo Maresca expected to replace him. One dynasty closing, another attempting to begin.
Across town, Manchester United have chosen continuity. Michael Carrick has been appointed on a permanent basis after a successful interim spell, a move that signals their belief that a calmer, more measured rebuild is the way forward.
Two of Liverpool’s fiercest rivals have made their calls. Liverpool, for now, stand still. The question is how long that can last.
Tuchel’s England Call and Liverpool’s Next Hope
While the senior picture looks cloudy, Liverpool’s future has a fresh face.
Rio Ngumoha, just 17, has earned a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England training camp ahead of the World Cup in Florida. He has not made the final 26-man squad, but he will train with the Three Lions and step into a senior environment that could shape his next few years.
Ngumoha has impressed at Liverpool this season and is already nudging into the conversation about England’s future options. The club see him as a genuine prospect; now the national setup will take a closer look.
Tuchel’s final squad contains no current Liverpool players, yet there is still a clear Anfield thread. Former Reds Jarell Quansah and Jordan Henderson are in, while Trent Alexander-Arnold has missed out on selection. Familiar names, different roles, same scrutiny.
Transfer Tangles: Rayan, Bowen, Kroupi and Barcola
Off the pitch, Liverpool’s recruitment picture is as busy as ever, and just as complicated.
In Brazil, O Dia reports that Liverpool have shown interest in Bournemouth’s Brazilian talent Rayan, alongside other clubs. The response from the south coast is blunt. Bournemouth have “no interest” in negotiating this window. ESPN Brazil goes further, stating there are “no plans” to sell him this summer unless an “absurd” offer lands on the table. Liverpool like the player, but this is a door that will not open easily.
Closer to home, Jarrod Bowen is firmly on the radar. The Guardian has already placed Liverpool in a three-way tussle with Manchester United and Chelsea for the West Ham captain. The outcome of the weekend could be decisive. West Ham face a survival fight against Tottenham Hotspur; if the Hammers go down, prising Bowen away becomes far more realistic. If they stay up, the conversation changes entirely.
Then there is Eli Junior Kroupi, another Bournemouth name in Liverpool’s notebook. The 19-year-old Frenchman has caught the eye in the Premier League, and Sportsboom reports that Liverpool are ready to “step up” their pursuit. Arsenal, Manchester United and Aston Villa are all in the frame, but Liverpool believe they can push to the front of the queue.
The catch is the price. Bournemouth are expected to demand around £100m. For a teenager, even a gifted one, that is a figure that tests the resolve of any recruitment team.
PSG’s Bradley Barcola sits in a different category. L’Equipe reports that the French champions are open to a sale this summer if the right offer arrives. Liverpool have been linked, yet there is a growing sense that they may cool their interest.
The reason is simple and close to home: Rio Ngumoha.
Barcola operates in the same area of the pitch as the 17-year-old. Bringing him in now risks blocking a pathway that Liverpool are increasingly keen to protect. With Ngumoha already impressing and now on England’s radar, the club must decide whether to buy ready-made quality or back their own prodigy.
Slot Speaks, Liverpool Wait
Amid all this, Arne Slot still has a game to prepare for. He faced the media ahead of Sunday’s clash with Brentford, addressing Mohamed Salah, the latest injury situation and Alisson’s future. The focus, officially at least, remains on the immediate task.
Yet the noise around him is growing. Odds shorten on Iraola. Rivals lock in their managers. Youngsters push for space in the squad while expensive targets hover on the horizon.
Liverpool stand at one of those familiar junctures: trust the current project, or lean into change. The next decision, in the dugout and in the market, will tell the rest of the league exactly what kind of club they intend to be in the seasons to come.
