Liverpool Ownership Talks with Jeff Bezos Consortium

Liverpool’s ownership picture is edging towards a dramatic new chapter, with one of the world’s richest men now at the heart of talks over a major investment.

BBC Sport understands that a consortium featuring Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has moved its discussions forward over buying around a 30% stake in Liverpool. The group is fronted by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, underlining the scale of financial firepower now circling Anfield.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s owners since 2010, confirmed last month that Bhatia’s consortium had “expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club”. Those conversations have now advanced, with the focus on a significant but non-controlling shareholding rather than a full takeover.

Bhatia brings a deep football background as well as money. The son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, he spent 18 years as a director and co-owner at Queens Park Rangers before relinquishing his stake only last month. That long stint in the English game gives the group a figurehead who knows the particular demands and politics of running a club in this country.

Bezos, by contrast, needs no introduction in global business. The American entrepreneur, who built Amazon into an e-commerce giant, is the fourth-richest person on the planet. Forbes values the 62-year-old’s net worth at around $256bn (£192bn), a fortune that instantly changes the perception of any project he touches.

Saverin’s presence adds another layer of tech-world clout, linking Liverpool’s potential new investors to two of the most powerful brands of the digital age. For FSG, who have long positioned themselves as careful, data-driven custodians rather than free-spending benefactors, the attraction of a “strategic minority investment” is clear: fresh capital without surrendering control.

The precise structure, valuation and timetable of any deal remain under wraps, and there is no indication yet that FSG are prepared to sell outright. But with a Bezos-backed consortium now firmly at the table, the financial landscape around Liverpool looks poised for a significant shift – and the rest of the Premier League will be watching closely.
