Liverpool Reject Bayern's Pursuit of Untouchable Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool have drawn a thick red line through Bayern Munich’s latest raid on the Premier League talent pool. The name at the centre of it: Rio Ngumoha, a 17-year-old winger the club now regard as non-negotiable.

The story broke into the open on Friday. David Ornstein reported that Bayern were exploring a move for Ngumoha, identifying the teenager as a primary target for their left flank. No formal contact between the clubs, he stressed, but the German champions had made their intentions clear.

Liverpool’s response was even clearer. Not for sale.

Ngumoha is regarded inside Anfield as one of the standout prospects of his age group anywhere in the league, a wide player with the kind of one‑v‑one ability and acceleration that clubs like Bayern rarely ignore. At 17, he is already being talked about as a key piece of Liverpool’s next attacking cycle rather than a distant project.

Bayern, though, pushed hard. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg revealed that Vincent Kompany had personally spoken with Ngumoha, giving the green light from the dugout. Bayern, he reported, had reached a full verbal agreement with the player and his camp on 26 May, lining him up as an “absolute priority” back‑up to Luis Díaz on the left, as they also pursue Anthony Gordon.

The pressure built. Then it snapped.

According to Plettenberg, the deal “collapsed” on Thursday, at least for now, with Bayern left to consider other club‑to‑club options while their admiration for Ngumoha remains on record. The sticking point was never the player’s side. It was Liverpool’s refusal to engage.

That stance was underlined firmly a few hours later. Fabrizio Romano reported that Liverpool have classed Ngumoha as “untouchable” for months, describing him as a crucial part of the club’s project and ruling out any chance of an exit this summer.

It is a line that reflects more than just one transfer decision. Fenway Sports Group have been accused in the past of cashing in at the right price; this time, with a 17‑year‑old winger who has yet to establish himself in the first team, they are choosing protection over profit.

Bayern have made a habit of prising away emerging Premier League talent before it fully blooms. In Ngumoha’s case, Liverpool have decided the blossoming will happen on Merseyside.
