Zoma Mania: Nürnberg Star Attracts European Attention

A storm is brewing in the 2. Bundesliga, and at the centre of it stands Mohamed Ali Zoma. The 1. FC Nürnberg striker has gone from clever signing to transfer hot property in barely a year.

According to Bild, the 22-year-old has drawn interest from several clubs, with French sides RC Lens and Paris FC among those monitoring him closely. Other suitors are said to have made concrete moves as well. The queue is getting longer.

Nürnberg, though, are in no mood to be pushed around.

Sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou made that crystal clear after last weekend’s 3-0 win over Dynamo Dresden, a game Zoma simply took over by scoring all three goals. “I don't want to start thinking about it at all, I want to keep the player. The others certainly know as well that he is not a cheap player,” he said, underlining the club’s stance.

Supervisory board chairman Peter Meier had already set the tone earlier, putting at least €20 million on the table as a reference point for any transfer fee. That figure alone tells you how Nürnberg value their striker – and how strong their negotiating position is.

Nürnberg Know the Big-Sale Game

This is not new territory for the club. Nürnberg have become quietly efficient at turning young talent into serious money.

In recent years, FCN have cashed in on:

• Can Uzun for €13 million
• Casper Jander for €12 million
• Nathaniel Brown for €11.75 million

Brown’s case underlines just how shrewd the club can be: thanks to a sell-on clause, his move to Bayern Munich this summer, worth around €50 million, brought in more money again.

Against that backdrop, Nürnberg do not need to sell Zoma. They can afford to wait. Or simply say no.

That financial security feeds directly into the optimism of coach Miroslav Klose. He, more than anyone, knows what it means to build an attack around a prolific forward – and what it means to lose one.

“You know how quickly things can move in football, but I am not concerning myself with that at all. I know that he feels very comfortable here. I don't have the feeling that he wants to go anywhere,” Klose explained. The message: hands off, at least for now.

From AlbinoLeffe to Derby Days

Zoma’s rise makes the current situation even more striking. Only last year, Nürnberg picked him up from Italian third-division side UC AlbinoLeffe. The fee is understood to have been around €1.5 million. If he goes for anything close to the €20 million mark now being discussed internally, the club would be staring at a massive profit.

Born in Merate, in the province of Lecco in Lombardy, Zoma brings Italian schooling and Ivorian roots onto the pitch – a blend of technique, physicality and sharp movement that has lit up Nürnberg’s attack.

His hat-trick against Dynamo Dresden was not just a breakout performance; it was a statement. A few days later, he was in the starting XI again for the prestigious Franconian derby against Greuther Fürth, a sign of just how indispensable he has already become.

So the situation is clear: Europe is watching, France is circling, and Nürnberg are holding the cards. The only real unknown is how long they can keep their new star before one of those offers becomes simply too big to refuse.
