Liverpool's Strategy for Barcola Amid Arsenal's Pursuit of Rogers

Aston Villa’s winger hunt has blown the summer market wide open – and Liverpool might be the biggest beneficiaries.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Villa have begun work on signing a new “top winger”, with Arsenal now expected to step up their pursuit of Morgan Rogers. The Gunners, Romano reports, are preparing to “accelerate” talks for the England youth international, with discussions already advanced on the player’s side.

Crucially, Romano is clear on one point: Arsenal are not working on a deal for Bradley Barcola.

Arsenal all-in on Rogers, not Barcola

On Thursday evening, Romano detailed Villa’s plans on X, outlining how the Midlands club are moving for a high-level wide player after tying up deals for Manzambi and João Gomes and continuing talks for a left-back in Pervis Estupiñán.

Arsenal, he added, have Rogers ring-fenced as a priority target. The pursuit of the Aston Villa winger is being treated as a separate case from Christos Tzolis, with the north London club keen on both options.

No contact with Paris Saint-Germain over Barcola. No negotiations. No exploratory talks.

For Liverpool, that matters.

Clear runway to Barcola – at a cost

With Arsenal’s focus locked on Rogers, the path to Barcola looks far less congested. The France international, a left-sided attacker of real pedigree, has been widely identified as a leading offensive target for Liverpool this summer.

PSG, though, are not expected to entertain any cut-price offers. Romano and others have consistently underlined that it will take a significant fee to prise Barcola away from the French champions.

Liverpool’s transfer window so far has been strangely quiet. Victor Muñoz remains the only arrival of note, and the ongoing World Cup has undeniably complicated negotiations across Europe. Fixtures, travel, and player availability have all slowed the pace of deals.

Yet the sense around Anfield is that the silence is also strategic. The club’s recruitment team appear to be working around one central question: what will it actually cost to bring Barcola out of Paris?

Decision time for Liverpool’s hierarchy

If Liverpool have delayed other business to keep their powder dry for Barcola, they cannot afford to flinch now.

The fear is obvious. Should the final price land beyond what the club are prepared to pay, Liverpool risk walking away late in the window with too much work left and too little time to do it. That scenario would leave Andoni Iraola short of attacking options heading into a season where the margins at the top of the Premier League will again be brutal.

By this stage, Liverpool’s hierarchy – led by Richard Hughes – ought to have a clear sense of PSG’s expectations: the ballpark fee, the structure of payments, the add-ons likely to be required. Just as importantly, they should know their own ceiling.

If that ceiling falls short, the club need to pivot immediately. If it does not, they face a different question altogether.
