Lowest-Ranked Teams Securing Spots in the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest ever, featuring 48 national teams competing across three countries: Mexico, United States, and Canada. Besides the usual favorites and strong contenders, several low-ranked teams have earned their place, aiming either to cause surprises or simply to take part in a historic event.

Here’s a look at the lowest-ranked squads that qualified and the tough battles they face.

5. Bosnia and Herzegovina

Ranked No. 65 by FIFA, the “Dragons” are the lowest-ranked European team to qualify. Their qualification was shocking, knocking out four-time world champions Italy during the European qualifiers. Their peak ranking came in 2013 when they hit No. 13, but since then, they've slipped considerably.

In the World Cup group, they will meet Canada (27), Switzerland (17), and Qatar (51). This group looks manageable on paper, giving Bosnia and Herzegovina a chance to become one of the lowest-ranked teams ever to make it past the group stage.

4. Ghana

The “Black Stars” are rebuilding and currently sit at No. 74 in the FIFA rankings, far from their golden era that peaked at No. 14 in 2008. Their group is challenging, featuring Panama (33), England (4), and Croatia (11). The quality and experience of these opponents put Ghana among the teams with the hardest path in the group phase.

3. Curaçao

Making their World Cup debut, the “Blue Wave” qualified undefeated, finishing ahead of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. Sitting at No. 82, they have never been inside the Top 50. Even as the Netherlands Antilles, they had no major international success.

Their group is a harsh introduction to the tournament, opening against Germany (10), then Ecuador (23), and ending with Ivory Coast (34). A tough baptism for Curaçao.

2. Haiti

“Les Grenadiers” had an unexpected qualification run, advancing from a group including Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This marks their first World Cup appearance since 1974. Currently ranked No. 83, their highest was No. 38 in 2013 following strong Caribbean Cup showings.

They face a formidable group: Scotland (43), Brazil (6) - five-time champions, and Morocco (8), semifinalists in 2022. A real test awaits Haiti.

The “All Whites” have long dominated Oceania but come in as the lowest-ranked team overall at No. 85. Their best rank was No. 47 in 2002, but they've dropped since. Still, they remain the region's top football nation.

They must navigate a tough group against Iran (21), Egypt (29), and Belgium (9). Should New Zealand reach the knockout stage, they would set a new record for the lowest-ranked team to advance in World Cup history. Currently, Russia holds that record, having reached the Round of 16 in 2018 ranked No. 70.
