Spain Coach Luis de la Fuente Confident in Pedri, Lamine Yamal, and Gavi Before World Cup Quarter-Final

Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s head coach, expressed strong confidence in the contributions of Barcelona players Pedri, Lamine Yamal, and Gavi as the team prepares for their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final clash against Belgium.

His remarks arrived shortly after France secured a semi-final spot by defeating Morocco, with Spain aiming to join the last four of the tournament.

Pedri's Role in Spain's Midfield

When asked about Pedri's recent performances, De la Fuente highlighted his consistency and influence. Even if Pedri isn’t always dazzling, he consistently sets the tone for the team.

"It probably wasn’t the most spectacular performance, but it was certainly effective. And those who came on benefited from that work," the coach said. "Not everyone can be at 100%, but with us, Pedri is always at his best. I’ll stick with the Pedri from the national team."

Lamine Yamal's Growth and Potential

Regarding Lamine Yamal, the coach acknowledged the young player’s motivation and potential while emphasizing the importance of keeping him composed to avoid anxiety.

"We know the best Lamine is yet to come because he hasn’t quite reached that moment of brilliance yet," De la Fuente explained. "He showed defensive maturity against a strong opponent recently and is going to reach his full attacking potential because he’s impressive. We’re going to wait for it because he’s got what it takes."

Gavi's Ambitious Dream and Confidence

De la Fuente also commented on Gavi's bold dream of scoring a bicycle kick in the World Cup final. Rather than dismissing it as fantasy, the coach embraced the ambition.

"I’d be delighted because it would mean we’d reached the final, and if Gavi – whom we love so much – were to score it on top of that. That shows he believes we can get there. Gavi is a fantastic lad and a great footballer," the coach concluded.
