Manchester City Reject Barcelona's Initial Rodri Bid

Manchester City have turned down a £38.5m offer from Barcelona for Rodri, drawing a firm line in one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer sagas.

City are prepared to cash in on the 30-year-old, but only on their terms. The Premier League champions value the midfielder at more than £60m, a figure that reflects both his pedigree and his importance to Pep Guardiola’s era, even as he enters the final year of his contract at Etihad Stadium.

For months, the script pointed towards Madrid. Real Madrid had been widely expected to be Rodri’s next stop, the natural glamour move for the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner. That path has now closed. BBC sources say talks with Real have ended, leaving Barcelona to seize the initiative.

Barcelona step to the front of the queue

The Catalan club received the player’s approval to open negotiations with City on Thursday, and moved quickly. Their first formal bid landed on Friday. It was rejected just as quickly.

Inside Barcelona, there had been caution. Club sources initially indicated there were no guarantees they could get a deal over the line, a nod to their financial constraints and the scale of the operation. Yet the mood has shifted. The situation is now described as “developing”, with Barca in ongoing discussions with Rodri’s representatives and braced for a drawn‑out negotiation with City.

The pressure sits squarely on the calendar. Rodri is in the final 12 months of his contract and has not signed an extension. Speculation over his future has swirled all summer, and every day that passes chips away at City’s leverage. But not enough, in their view, to accept a cut‑price fee.

A Ballon d'Or winner with questions over his body

Rodri’s status is not in doubt. When fit, he remains one of the most complete midfielders in world football.

His club season, though, has been far from straightforward. He missed much of the 2024-25 campaign with a serious knee injury, and a hamstring problem disrupted parts of the previous year. Those issues would normally cool interest at the top end of the market.

Then came the World Cup.

Rodri dominated the tournament, driving Spain to their second world title and collecting the player of the tournament award along the way. That run, capped by the Ballon d'Or, reset the conversation. Any lingering concerns over his form vanished under the weight of his performances on the biggest stage.

At present, he is again sidelined, this time after back surgery last month. He is expected to rejoin his City team-mates in Manchester early next week, a return that will only intensify the noise around him. Every training picture, every hint of body language, will be read as a clue.

City eye the next move

Inside City, there is no appetite for drift. With the transfer window edging into its second week of August, the champions want clarity. Either Rodri commits, or he goes and a replacement arrives.

They have already begun planning for life after him. Talks are under way with Lille over 18-year-old Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, a player seen as a long-term project rather than a like-for-like plug-in. Lille’s stance is uncompromising: an asking price of £86m that currently stands as a major obstacle.

That figure, set against City’s valuation of Rodri at just over £60m, underlines the complexity of the market. Selling a proven Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder and paying more for a teenager with potential is a gamble, even for a club as sure-footed as City in recruitment.

So the standoff continues. Barcelona push, City hold, and Rodri waits between two giants and one expiring contract.
