Manchester City Stand Firm on Rodri Amid Barcelona Interest

Manchester City have drawn a hard line in the sand over Rodri, knocking back a £38.5m (€45m) offer from Barcelona and making it clear they will not entertain anything below £60m for the Spain captain.

For the first time since he walked into the Etihad in 2019, Rodri’s future feels genuinely open. The 30-year-old is in the final year of his contract, has rejected a lucrative extension and, after the departure of Pep Guardiola, has decided it is time to go home. Talks with Real Madrid collapsed this week. Barcelona stepped in and, crucially, have become his preferred destination.

Personal terms are understood to be agreed with the Spanish champions. That part of the deal is not the problem. The fee is.

City, who signed Rodri from Atlético Madrid five years ago and built much of their recent dominance around his control of midfield, see no reason to discount a player who only last month collected the World Cup Golden Ball as the tournament’s outstanding performer. They believe his value reflects that status and are adamant they will not be strong-armed into a cut‑price sale, even with his contract running down.

Barcelona keep pushing. They have to. Frenkie de Jong’s knee injury has ripped a hole in Hansi Flick’s midfield plans for the opening months of the season, and the club have identified Rodri as the ideal replacement to anchor the side. On Wednesday, the Spain international spoke directly with Flick and sporting director Deco about the move, reinforcing his desire to return to La Liga and to a dressing room that badly needs his authority.

Timing adds another twist. Rodri has undergone minor back surgery and will miss most of City’s pre-season schedule. That absence gives Barcelona a window they hope to exploit, while for City it complicates preparations for a campaign that could yet start without the man who has been their metronome.

Behind the scenes, City have already begun reshaping their midfield options. Elliot Anderson has arrived from Nottingham Forest in a £116m deal, a significant outlay on a player they clearly see as central to the next phase of the squad. Talks with Lille over Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi are ongoing, with the fee potentially rising to £80m.

If Rodri leaves, though, City may decide youth and potential are not enough. A more seasoned replacement is on the table, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández among the names under serious consideration. The Argentinian World Cup winner would not come cheap and, importantly, he is not only on City’s radar.

Real Madrid want him too. And they are not enjoying this particular battle.

José Mourinho, back at the Santiago Bernabéu for a second spell, had made the signing of a central midfielder a priority. First he saw Madrid lose ground in the race for Rodri to their greatest rivals. Now Fernández, another primary target, is being courted by City. Reports in Spain suggest the 63-year-old is far from impressed with the prospect of being outmanoeuvred again.

Madrid have already spent heavily this summer. Winger Yan Diomande has arrived for £115m, while Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Carlos Espí have all been added to a squad being rebuilt at speed. Those deals carry a cost. To go after Fernández, the European giants may have to sacrifice one of their prized young midfielders, with Aurélien Tchouaméni or Eduardo Camavinga the most likely candidates to be moved on.

So the dominoes line up. Rodri waits on Barcelona and City. City weigh up whether to cash in now or risk losing him for nothing next summer. Barcelona juggle finances and urgency. Madrid lurk, wounded but not out of the fight, while Fernández sits at the centre of a tug-of-war that could reshape three midfields across Europe.
