Manchester City Firm on Rodri Transfer Amid Barcelona Interest

Manchester City have drawn a hard line over Rodri – and Barcelona have just crashed straight into it.

The Spanish champions lodged their opening bid for the midfielder, but City dismissed the €45million (£38m) offer as “derisory”. From their point of view, it was nowhere near the level required to even start a serious conversation. They want closer to €80m (£68.5m). Until someone gets into that territory, Rodri is going nowhere.

City hold their ground

City have long been aware of Rodri’s wish to return to Spain. For a while, Real Madrid looked the natural destination. They were viewed as front-runners, the club best placed to tempt him home.

Then Barcelona arrived.

Once they stepped into the race, Rodri made his preference clear. Multiple reports say he has already agreed personal terms with Barça, and the Catalan club are acting like a side that know the player is on board.

But this is still a City deal to control. The Premier League champions have accepted that Rodri wants to leave, yet they have responded to Barcelona’s opening move with a reminder: until a suitable bid lands, he remains their player and is expected back in Manchester to continue his recovery from minor back surgery.

He will train, he will rehabilitate, and he will stay put unless the numbers change dramatically.

Inside the Etihad, there is even talk of a contract renewal. With only a year left on his current deal, City are prepared to keep him for that final season rather than sell at a discount. If no club pays what they consider his true value, they will simply refuse to cash in.

Barcelona plan their next move

Barcelona’s financial issues are no secret, but neither is their determination. They have identified Rodri as a cornerstone for their next cycle and, according to David Ornstein, they are not walking away after one failed attempt.

“Understand #MCFC want around €75m. Barcelona will be back with a new bid and remain optimistic. Rodri has already agreed terms,” Ornstein reported, adding that City see the fee currently on the table as “nowhere near” enough to start negotiations.

The message is blunt: if Barça want Rodri, they must find a way to pay close to City’s valuation. Until then, optimism in Catalonia meets cold reality in Manchester.

Bouaddi deal moves towards the finish line

While the Rodri saga plays out, City are already working on the next phase of their midfield rebuild.

Fabrizio Romano reports that negotiations with Lille for Ayyoub Bouaddi are in the final stages, with a deal described as “very close” between the clubs. Talks with the player’s camp are ongoing, but City are “on the verge” of an agreement and expect to wrap up the transfer soon.

Only then, Romano adds, will they “focus efforts on more signings”.

So City stand firm on Rodri’s price, Barcelona ready a new bid, and Bouaddi edges towards the Etihad. One midfielder may be edging towards the exit, another towards the door marked “future”.

The question now is simple: who blinks first – the club that wants to keep its standard-bearer, or the one that believes he is the key to its revival?
