Manchester City Target Enzo Fernández Amid Midfield Changes

Manchester City are bracing for a summer of upheaval in the heart of their midfield – and Enzo Fernández has moved near the top of their contingency plans.

Sources have indicated City view the Chelsea midfielder as a prime target if Rodri leaves in the coming weeks, with new manager Enzo Maresca described as a strong admirer of the Argentina international. The interest is serious. The numbers are the problem.

Chelsea have previously put a £120million valuation on Fernández and intend to hold that line. They would be reluctant sellers, but not immovable ones, if a bid at that level arrived. City, for now, are not prepared to go that high, particularly with another major midfield deal already on the table.

The Premier League champions have committed around £116m to bring Elliot Anderson into their midfield this summer, a move that has already eaten heavily into their budget. On top of that, they remain locked in talks with Lille over Ayyoub Bouaddi, who is still viewed as their first-choice midfield signing in the final stretch of the window.

That pursuit has dragged on for months. City have pushed, Lille have held firm, and the negotiation has yet to hit the decisive phase. Any agreement for Bouaddi is expected to land around the £100m mark, a fee that would make matching Chelsea’s full asking price for Fernández highly unlikely under current conditions.

Yet the situation at the Etihad is shifting. And quickly.

Rodri’s future hangs over everything. The Spain international, the metronome of City’s recent dominance, looks increasingly likely to depart before the window closes. Losing him alone would force a rethink. Losing him and another central midfielder could rip up the entire plan.

Tijjani Reijnders is also being linked with a move away from Manchester, and his case is more nuanced than a simple transfer decision from the club’s side. The Dutchman, 28, is understood to be unhappy with his role last season. He featured 50 times in all competitions, but only 19 of those appearances were Premier League starts. That imbalance has left him questioning his place in Maresca’s plans.

If early signs this season do not point to a bigger role, Reijnders is prepared to consider his options before the 1 September deadline. Should both he and Rodri depart, City’s recruitment strategy changes overnight.

Two midfielders out would mean two in. That is where the door opens again for the idea of pairing Bouaddi with Fernández.

Any double deal of that scale would require significant outgoing funds, but the departures of Rodri and Reijnders would provide exactly that. City’s hierarchy are understood to be “exploring” what a move for Fernández might look like in that scenario, even if they remain unwilling to simply meet Chelsea’s £120m demand.

For Chelsea, the stance is clear. They will not encourage bids and will lean on that valuation as hard as they can. Fernández remains central to their plans, and they know City have already spent heavily this summer. The London club see little reason to offer discounts.

For City, the calculation is more delicate. They are trying to rebuild a midfield spine on the fly, with a new manager, a changing dressing room and a market that punishes hesitation.

If Rodri stays, Bouaddi looks like the priority and Fernández a luxury. If he goes – and if Reijnders follows – that “luxury” might suddenly look like a necessity in a window where every top club knows exactly how desperate you are.
