Manchester United’s search for another midfielder has hit a hard stop in Catalonia. Marc Bernal is going nowhere.

United, fresh from spending heavily on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, had explored the possibility of prising the 19-year-old away from Barcelona this summer. His name has sat near the top of Old Trafford’s midfield shortlist for months, a tantalising option as the club reshapes the core of its team.

Barcelona’s response could not be clearer: absolutely not.

Bernal closes the door

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Bernal has decided to stay at Camp Nou, despite firm interest from United and a cluster of Europe’s heavyweights. Chelsea and Arsenal have both tracked him. Roma have been in the conversation. Al Nassr, with Saudi money behind them, also registered their admiration.

None of it has moved the needle.

The report stresses that Barcelona never intended to entertain offers this summer. Internally, the view is that Bernal is a pillar of their future midfield, not a saleable asset. The player, for his part, is described as having “absolute loyalty” to the La Liga champions, a stance that effectively slams the door on any late push from United’s recruitment team.

The numbers back that up. Bernal’s contract includes a release clause of €500m (£427.5m) – a figure designed not as a negotiating tool, but as a deterrent. Unless Barcelona suddenly soften their stance and accept a vastly reduced fee, a transfer is not just unlikely; it is virtually impossible.

A breakout season in Catalonia

The resolve in Barcelona is rooted in Bernal’s rapid rise. Last season, the teenager stepped out of the academy shadow and into the heart of the first team, making 22 La Liga appearances as Barça wrestled the title back from Real Madrid.

He did not just make up the numbers. He grew into the campaign, trusted in high-pressure games as Barcelona edged their great rivals to the championship. The club’s faith extended into Europe, where Bernal featured six times in the Champions League, scoring once in the last-16 tie against Newcastle United.

Those minutes, those stages, change a player’s profile overnight. For a club like United, constantly scanning for young, top-level midfielders who can define an era, Bernal ticks every box. For Barcelona, they simply underline why he is untouchable.

United’s midfield rebuild continues without him

Back in Manchester, the refusal from Camp Nou forces a recalibration rather than a rethink. United have already moved decisively in this window, paying £50m to bring Andrey Santos from Chelsea and triggering the £35m release clause to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

Two midfielders in. Yet the market noise has not died down. A third arrival in that area remains a live topic inside recruitment meetings and on the rumour mill, even with Santos and Tielemans now bedding into pre-season.

What Bernal’s stance does is narrow the field. One of the most coveted young midfielders in Europe is off the table. United’s football department, led on the training pitch by Michael Carrick during pre-season, must look elsewhere if they want another addition before the window shuts.
