Manchester United Faces PSG with New Signings and Key Absences

Manchester United’s summer finally caught up with them. The World Cup, the injuries, the mandated breaks – all of it is written across Michael Carrick’s squad list for the friendly against PSG.

New signing finally arrives – but others wait

The headline for Carrick is a positive one: his new Belgian midfielder is finally available. Belgium’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals pushed back his first minutes in a United shirt, but the 21-day rest period is now complete and he can be called upon.

The same rule bites harder elsewhere.

England trio Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, along with Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez, are all still sidelined by that compulsory post-tournament break. None of them can feature. Up front, Benjamin Sesko remains out too, still dealing with the shin problem that cut short his season last term.

Illness, absences and a thin goalkeeping room

Carrick must also do without Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha. Cunha has only just returned to training after Brazil duty at the World Cup, but neither he nor Lammens will be involved against PSG.

United have confirmed both are recovering from minor, unrelated illnesses and will rejoin the group at next week’s training camp in the Republic of Ireland. That trip includes a historic meeting with old rivals Leeds at Dublin’s Croke Park on Wednesday night, a fixture that already feels like more than just another pre-season run-out.

Between the posts, the picture is even more stretched.

Altay Bayindir is out of the frame after sealing a loan move to Celta Vigo on Friday. With Lammens unavailable and new signing Karl Darlow still not ready to play following minor surgery carried out during his time at Leeds late last season, United are short on experienced options.

Radek Vitek’s permanent move to Middlesbrough, a deal worth up to £14million, has only deepened that shortage. It leaves 40-year-old Tom Heaton as the starter once again, with Dermot Mee and teenager Fred Heath stepping in as his understudies.

Fernandes returns, Mbeumo leads the line

Carrick has named a 22-man squad to face PSG, and there is at least one familiar figure back at the heart of it. Captain Bruno Fernandes returns to headline the travelling party and restore some of United’s usual authority in midfield.

He is joined by defenders Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, with Mazraoui the only one of that trio set to start. The shape of the side around them, though, reflects the compromises of a disrupted pre-season.

Up front, Bryan Mbeumo keeps his place as the central striker after his decisive display in Stockholm, where he scored twice in a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid. His form earns him another chance to lead the line, but some of the youthful intrigue from that game has been stripped away.

Fifteen-year-old JJ Gabriel, who made his senior debut against Atletico, drops out of the squad, as does fellow youngster Jim Thwaites, another debutant from the same match. The experiment pauses, for now; the stakes against PSG demand a little more certainty.

Long-term injury blows

Not all of Carrick’s problems are short term.

Midfielder Manuel Ugarte faces months out after undergoing surgery in July on a serious knee injury suffered at the World Cup with Uruguay. At the back, Matthijs de Ligt is still not ready to return from a long-standing back issue, denying United another senior option in defence.

So Carrick heads into a glamour tie with PSG armed with his captain again, a new Belgian midfielder finally ready, and a veteran goalkeeper holding the fort. Around them, there is youth, promise, and a fair amount of improvisation.

This is pre-season, but it already feels like a stress test of United’s depth before the real campaign has even begun.
