Manchester United's Pursuit of Aurélien Tchouaméni: A Key Midfield Target

Manchester United refuse to let Aurélien Tchouaméni go.

Knocked back once already this summer, United have returned to Real Madrid for the France international, who sits near the top of their list as they search for a new midfield anchor in the wake of Casemiro’s move to Inter Miami.

United’s Casemiro problem

Casemiro’s departure has left a clear hole at the base of United’s midfield. The club have moved quickly to add André Santos and Youri Tielemans, but both lean naturally towards the attacking side of the game. They can knit play, they can arrive in the box, they can create.

What they do not do is patrol the space in front of the back four with the same authority as a specialist holding midfielder.

That is where Tchouaméni comes in.

The ideal profile

From United’s perspective, the Real Madrid man is almost the prototype for what they want: young, physically dominant, tactically disciplined and comfortable dictating the tempo from deep. He can screen, he can recover, he can balance a side that has often looked stretched between attack and defence.

It is no surprise, then, that United have gone back to Madrid during the current window, having already explored the possibility last winter and again at the start of the summer.

At that point, the signs pointed towards Tchouaméni staying put. According to The Sun, he looked set to remain at the Bernabéu and was even close to extending his contract. Real Madrid were planning with him, not without him.

United have tested that resolve again.

Mourinho’s plan – and United’s obstacle

There is a problem, and it has a very familiar face. José Mourinho is counting on Tchouaméni for the 2026–2027 season, seeing him as a central pillar of Real Madrid’s future midfield. When a coach of Mourinho’s stature marks a player as non-negotiable, the selling club tends to harden its stance.

That is the reality United are walking into. They are not just trying to buy a midfielder; they are trying to prise away a player Madrid see as part of their long-term core.

So the fit is perfect, the need is obvious, the interest is real. The question now is whether United can turn persistent admiration into an actual deal, or whether Tchouaméni becomes the one that got away from a midfield rebuild that still lacks its true anchor.
