Manchester United Rejects Galatasaray's Audacious Bruno Fernandes Bid
Manchester United are preparing to slam the door on Galatasaray after the Turkish champions made what has been described as an “audacious approach” for captain Bruno Fernandes.
The Istanbul club, who have thrown serious money at recent windows to land headline names such as Victor Osimhen and Leroy Sane, have turned their sights to Old Trafford’s standard‑bearer. They are understood to be putting together a substantial financial package to tempt the Portuguese midfielder.
United’s response is clear: don’t bother.
Fernandes, 31, is heading into the final 12 months of the three‑year contract he signed in 2024, though United hold an option to extend it by a further season. The deal also contains a £56 million release clause, but it can only be activated by clubs outside England – a detail that has inevitably caught the eye of ambitious European sides.
Even so, United have been planning the new season with their captain at the heart of everything, and that stance has not shifted. According to The Independent, any bid from Galatasaray will be promptly rejected. As far as the club hierarchy and Michael Carrick are concerned, Fernandes is not for sale.
This is not the first time his future has been tested. Reports in May from The Mirror framed Fernandes as a “dream target” for Galatasaray, who see him as the kind of marquee leader to push them deeper into European competition. United have had to fight off interest in their captain before and look ready to do so again as the clock ticks down towards deadline day.
The timing adds another layer of tension. The summer window is edging into its final weeks, the Premier League kicks off on Friday, and United are back in the Champions League for the first time since 2024. Letting their most influential player walk away now is simply not on the table.
Carrick sees Fernandes as central to his plans, both domestically and in Europe. The midfielder is expected to carry a major creative and leadership load in a campaign where United aim to build on last season’s third‑place finish – their best league placing since 2022/23 – and prove that surge was no one‑off.
There are, for now, no concrete moves to hand Fernandes an improved deal before the new season begins. That position could evolve once the campaign is underway and the club reassesses its long‑term structure. The release clause and contract length ensure United are not under immediate pressure, but the situation will not be allowed to drift indefinitely.
Fernandes himself has given little encouragement to would‑be suitors. Speaking last month, he underlined what it means to wear United’s armband and the weight that comes with it.
“Playing for Manchester United is always a special moment for everyone. At the same time, it brings a lot of responsibility with it,” he said. “But I don't think anyone comes to Manchester United thinking that we won't have the responsibility to win again, to be at the top of the Premier League, at the top of European football, because the club's history brings that responsibility.
“Regardless of the most recent years, they were not at the level that the club was used to. I think everyone always believes that we can be the ones who are going to do this, the ones who are going to turn the page, the ones who are going to make it possible for United to fight on all fronts. And I think that has to be special for us players, to realise that we can be the main, let's say, protagonists of this change of history for United to win again.”
Those are not the words of a captain looking for the exit.
United’s task now is to match that rhetoric with results. They open their Premier League campaign away to Hull City on Saturday, August 22, with a 12:30pm kick‑off, stepping into a season that doubles as a domestic test and a European return.
Galatasaray may yet test United’s resolve with numbers on a page. But for Carrick, and for a club trying to “turn the page” in its own history, the bigger question is simple: how do you put a price on the man you’ve asked to lead that revival?
