Manchester United Sign Young Goalkeeper Kit Margetson

Manchester United have added another young goalkeeper to their ranks, confirming the arrival of Kit Margetson from Swansea City as they simultaneously ramp up efforts to land Roma midfielder Manu Kone.

United move for Margetson – and a new generation in goal

Margetson, 19, joins United after his contract with Swansea expired, with the Premier League club agreeing a compensation package to reward the Welsh side for developing him from Under-15 level through to the senior setup.

The Wales Under-21 international is steeped in goalkeeping heritage. He is the son of Martyn Margetson, the former England and Swansea coach who now works with the Wales national team’s keepers. He had already edged close to the Championship stage; now he steps into a far harsher spotlight.

For United, Margetson becomes the second Welsh goalkeeper to arrive this summer, following the free transfer signing of Karl Darlow after his departure from Leeds. It is a clear pattern. United are quietly rebuilding the depth of their goalkeeping department, adding experience in Darlow and a development project in Margetson behind their established No 1.

The competition will be fierce. The pathway, though, is visible. Old Trafford has long been a demanding stage for goalkeepers; United are making sure there is no shortage of candidates willing to take it on.

Midfield rebuild gathers pace with Kone in their sights

While one deal is done, the next major push is taking shape in midfield.

Reports suggest they are ready to lodge an offer worth close to €50 million (£42.7m). That level of commitment underlines how central Kone is to their plans, but the race is anything but straightforward. Chelsea are tracking him. Atletico Madrid are in the frame. Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli are also credited with strong interest.

United, then, face a familiar battle: convincing a coveted, World Cup-proven midfielder that Old Trafford is the right stage for the next step of his career, and persuading Roma to sell at a price they can accept.
