Manchester United Target Manu Kone as Roma Set Price

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is not slowing down. After bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the club are now pushing to land a third central midfielder this summer – and all roads currently lead to Roma’s Manu Kone.

The 25-year-old has parked his future until the end of the World Cup, having instructed his representatives at Excellence Sport Nation to freeze talks during the tournament. That pause is about to end. France’s campaign finishes with Saturday’s third-place play-off against England, the same game that will wrap up the involvement of United duo Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford.

Once that whistle goes, the market opens for Kone.

United circle as Kone’s stance becomes clear

United are understood to have approached Kone’s entourage, testing the ground while the midfielder has quietly played himself into the spotlight. Roma’s price – and their problem

Roma have placed a clear marker down. They want around £47 million for Kone, a fee that would generate approximately £34 million in profit and, crucially, ease the club’s financial strain.

UEFA fined Roma £5 million earlier this summer for breaching the terms of their settlement agreement and allowing their squad cost ratio to climb above 70%. Cashing in on Kone would go a long way to settling that dispute and resetting their books.

Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has not hidden the reality.

“The financial fair play conditions are never exactly precise or defined, they vary from team to team. It’s undeniable that Roma know that we have to balance the budgets, which has been tough in recent years,” he told Radio Rai 1. “I’d hoped that entry into the Champions League would have been enough, but budgets are important for clubs and must be respected. I think there will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”

Clarity, in this case, likely means big decisions on big players. Kone sits at the top of that list.

A midfielder at his peak moment

On the pitch, Kone has chosen the perfect time to surge. Gasperini was frank about the midfielder’s domestic campaign.

“Kone had a great first half of the season, and then was out of action due to injury for a bit during the second half. He’s having a great World Cup,” he said. “He didn’t play with the France national team last year, but now he’s been able to claim a starting spot. It shows his potential and the work he’s put in.”

That arc – from club standout, through injury, to World Cup starter – is exactly the profile that attracts a club like United in the middle of a rebuild. They have already added Santos’ energy and Tielemans’ craft. Kone offers something different again: a midfielder entering his prime, hardened in Serie A and now tested on the biggest international stage.

Roma know his value. So do United and Chelsea. PSG lurk in the background as the club the player has always dreamed of, but not as an active bidder.
