Manchester United's £35m Tielemans Transfer: A Steal According to Obi Mikel

Manchester United have spent hundreds of millions trying to fix their midfield in recent years. According to John Obi Mikel, they might finally have cracked it – and for a fraction of the usual price.

On The Obi One Podcast, the former Chelsea midfielder could barely believe the numbers attached to United’s move for Youri Tielemans.

“For me, it’s Youri Tielemans,” Mikel said. “Honestly, how the f*ck did Manchester United get him for £35m? That’s a f*cking steal. I watched him before and during the World Cup, and you can see that this is a player.”

That last word hung in the air. A player. Not a system piece, not a squad filler. A midfielder Mikel clearly believes can reshape the way United operate with the ball.

A Midfield Chameleon

Mikel knows what it takes to control games at the highest level, and his admiration for Tielemans goes far beyond the transfer fee.

“Obviously, we all know how Tielemans plays, he can play as a six, an eight or a ten,” he said. “And when you have a player that can play anywhere, it gives you the variety to change the way you want to play. Tielemans is that guy. He scores goals, he’s dangerous from set pieces, he’s brilliant on the ball, and he rarely gives it away.”

That tactical flexibility is exactly what United have lacked. Too often, their midfield has been built around specialists who shine in one role and struggle in another. Tielemans, in contrast, offers options. He can sit, he can shuttle, he can create.

There is, Mikel admitted, one common criticism.

“The only thing people can say is that he’s not the quickest,” he conceded. “But he reads the game so well. He is very intelligent with and without the ball. When I look at all the midfielders that have transferred to different clubs [this summer], the best one is Tielemans.”

No caveats. No hedging. For Mikel, amid a market of inflated prices and speculative punts, United have landed the standout midfielder of the window.

Alderweireld: The Risk-Taker United Need

Mikel is not alone. Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld sees the same thing – but from a different vantage point.

Speaking to Hajper, the Belgian defender cut through the noise around numbers and spreadsheets.

“The problem with modern football is that sometimes we look too much at stats like assists and goals,” Alderweireld said. “Of course, Youri Tielemans creates assists and scores goals, and can shoot from outside the box and score free kicks, but he is so much more than that.”

The key, in his eyes, is Tielemans’ role as a connector. Not the final pass, but the one that unlocks the move.

“Tielemans is a link up player, and you have to watch him to understand why he is so important to his teams, not just look at his stats, because he is always trying to play the ball forward,” Alderweireld explained. “You have some midfield players who have a pass success rate of 98% but they are always playing the ball backwards. Tielemans is a guy who turns, opens up and plays the ball between the lines, and that’s very important for a club like Manchester United who need to break other teams down.”

That last line cuts straight to the heart of United’s long-standing problem. Too many safe passes. Not enough incision. Tielemans, Alderweireld argues, is wired differently.

Brave on the Ball, Brave Under Pressure

The technical qualities are obvious. What Alderweireld kept returning to, though, was mentality.

“Even when he’s playing in a deep role, he’s playing it in an attacking way. He’s thinking about going forwards, always,” he said. “Sometimes he will lose the ball but that’s what happens when you take some risks in games to make things happen, and I think that’s something United need, and he has the mentality to be brave and positive under the big pressure of the shirt.”

Old Trafford can shrink players. Tielemans, Alderweireld insists, will demand the ball instead.

“He will put in ultra big effort and say to his team-mates, give me the ball and let me change the game for you. He will take the responsibility to take Manchester United forward.”

Two former Premier League stalwarts, from two different clubs, both landing on the same conclusion: United have bought not just a midfielder, but a leader of their possession game.

If £35m really is the price for that kind of courage and craft in today’s market, the only real question left is how quickly Tielemans can turn that “f*cking steal” into a midfield United can finally trust.
