Marc Cucurella Confident Real Madrid Will Thrive Under Jose Mourinho
Marc Cucurella is optimistic about Real Madrid's prospects this season after joining the club from Chelsea in a £47.5 million transfer. The Spanish defender is excited to work under Jose Mourinho, who has recently returned to manage the Santiago Bernabeu side.
Impact of Mourinho's Return
Cucurella, speaking to Real Madrid TV following his first training session, praised Mourinho's influence on the squad. He noted the confidence and ease the manager brought to training, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the game and striving for victory.
"A lot of confidence and naturalness. We have to do what we know out on the field, and above all, enjoy ourselves. I think what we all want is to win and to have a great year," Cucurella said.
Living a Childhood Dream at Real Madrid
Although Cucurella spent part of his youth career at Barcelona's La Masia academy, the chance to join Real Madrid, one of Europe's most successful clubs, was irresistible. After contributing to Spain's World Cup triumph, he viewed joining Madrid as a major step up and an opportunity to be part of a prestigious project led by Mourinho.
"As a kid starting out playing football, then having the opportunity to play for a club like this, it’s very hard to turn down. When the opportunity came, I didn’t hesitate for a second. As a spectator, I’ve seen all those magical nights, those comebacks at the Bernabeu, all the Champions League titles they’ve lifted. Having the chance to experience it first-hand and be a part of it is a huge responsibility, but also a very beautiful and important challenge," he shared.
Honoured to Wear the Famous White Jersey
The move marks a significant milestone for the 28-year-old, who made 163 appearances for Chelsea and helped them win the Conference League and Club World Cup in 2025. Joining a squad strengthened by signings like Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, and Denzel Dumfries, Cucurella recognizes the high expectations at Real Madrid.
"It’s an honour – not many people can say they’ve worn this jersey. We’ve seen great legends here, it’s a club with a lot of history, the biggest in Europe. Being here today is a privilege, an honour, and above all, a reward for all the effort I’ve put into my career," he added.
Preparing for the New La Liga Season
Real Madrid's preseason is nearing completion with upcoming friendlies against Deportivo de A Coruna and Schalke. These matches will help Mourinho integrate new players and finalize tactical plans before the competitive season begins. Madrid will kick off their La Liga campaign on August 22 with an away match against Espanyol.
