Marcus Rashford's Future: Barcelona's Interest and Manchester United's Stance
When Barcelona unveiled Anthony Gordon earlier in the summer, it felt like the curtain had dropped on Marcus Rashford’s brief Catalan adventure. He had impressed, really impressed, on loan. Yet when it came to committing, the club turned away from the Englishman and towards a younger, longer-term project in Gordon.
Rashford went back to Old Trafford, but not with a clean slate or a clear future. His return to Manchester United has done little to silence the question hanging over him: is this just a stopover before a permanent exit?
Barcelona keep the line open
According to TEAMtalk, Barcelona have not walked away. Far from it. They remain in touch with Rashford’s camp, quietly sounding out the possibility of what would be a remarkable return to the Camp Nou.
From the outset, Barcelona’s preferred formula was simple: another loan. Rashford still has two years left on his United deal, and a temporary move suited their finances and their planning. United pushed back. They insisted on a permanent sale, a stance that ultimately led Barcelona to reject the €30 million option they held, even after Rashford delivered 28 goal contributions in all competitions last season.
So he went back to Manchester as the club’s highest-paid player. Michael Carrick has brought him back into the first-team fold, at least on paper. But the market is still open, and so is the door. A late twist before the window shuts cannot be dismissed, with Barcelona lurking in the background.
A growing need in attack
Barcelona’s attacking landscape has shifted sharply since last season. Rashford’s departure was only the start. Robert Lewandowski has gone. Ferran Torres has gone. Roony Bardghji, signed with such excitement, is out for the season through injury.
Gordon and Karim Adeyemi have arrived to plug some of the gaps, yet there is no sense at the club that the rebuild in the forward line is complete. The squad still feels one attacker light, one reliable source of goals and chaos short.
Rashford would not hesitate. By all accounts, he would jump at the chance to return to Catalonia. The complication lies in Manchester. Whether United would soften their stance and accept another loan — even one with an obligation to buy — remains unclear.
Alvarez, Rashford and a transfer domino
The Rashford question is tied tightly to another: Julian Alvarez. Barcelona are still working on a deal for the Argentine, but Atletico Madrid have shown no inclination to relax their position. Their stance remains firm, the negotiations stuck.
That deadlock is shaping Barcelona’s entire attacking plan. As long as Alvarez stays out of reach, alternatives grow more attractive. And if the Alvarez pursuit finally breaks down, Rashford’s name will move quickly back up the list.
For now, Rashford trains and plays as a United footballer, while debate rumbles on inside Old Trafford about his long-term role and value. Barcelona, watching and waiting, have left one crucial thing on the table: the possibility that this story is not finished yet.
