Marianucci's Serious Knee Injury Hits Napoli Hard Before Season Start

Massimiliano Allegri’s Napoli project has taken its first major hit before a competitive ball has even been kicked.

Luca Marianucci, the 22-year-old centre-back hoping to force his way into the first-team picture, has suffered a serious injury to his left knee that is expected to rule him out for an extended spell. The damage comes at the worst possible time for both player and club, just as Allegri was trying to shape a new defensive structure ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

The incident unfolded in last weekend’s 1-1 friendly draw with Celta Vigo. Introduced from the bench, Marianucci lasted only 25 minutes before he was forced off, clearly in distress. What initially looked like a painful knock has now been confirmed as something far more severe.

After a round of diagnostic tests at the Pineta Grande Hospital, Napoli released a stark medical bulletin. The club confirmed “a high-grade medial collateral ligament injury to the left knee” following the contusion and sprain sustained in the Celta Vigo match. In simple terms: major ligament damage, and a long road back.

For Marianucci, it is a brutal interruption to a crucial phase of his career. The towering defender had returned to Naples after a loan spell at Torino in the second half of last season, determined to convince Allegri he could be part of the new era. Since joining from Empoli in 2025, he has made just two appearances for Napoli. This pre-season was his window, his audition.

Now that window has slammed shut, at least for the foreseeable future.

The injury also complicates Allegri’s planning. Marianucci was not yet a nailed-on starter, but he offered depth, size, and a different profile in central defence as the coach worked to assemble a solid backline. With the Serie A opener against Genoa looming on August 22, every option mattered. One has now disappeared.

Napoli’s medical staff will monitor the defender closely over the coming days and weeks to decide on the next step: surgery or a conservative rehabilitation programme. That choice will shape the length and nature of his recovery, but either way, Allegri must proceed as if he will be without him for a significant chunk of the season.

The schedule does not wait. After Genoa, Napoli welcome Como to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona eight days later for their first home fixture of the campaign. Allegri, already under the microscope as he begins life in the Partenopei dugout, now has to redraw his defensive plans on the fly.

For Marianucci, the task is more solitary but no less demanding: endure the rehab, fight his way back, and try again to claim a place in a Napoli side that may look very different by the time he returns.
