Mason Greenwood's Potential Move to Fenerbahce Could Benefit Manchester United

Manchester United may have thought they had closed the Mason Greenwood chapter last summer. They will not be saying that now.

The academy graduate, who left Old Trafford for Marseille in 2024, is at the centre of another transfer saga – one that could quietly hand United a significant financial boost.

Greenwood’s rise in France

On the pitch, Greenwood has rebuilt his reputation in Ligue 1. The 24-year-old delivered 16 goals and seven assists in 32 league appearances for Marseille last season, a return that dragged him firmly back into the European shop window.

Marseille, though, fell short of Champions League qualification. That failure has shifted the landscape. Greenwood is expected to move on, and the list of suitors reflects how far his stock has risen: Roma, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus have all been linked as the summer window approaches.

Yet the most concrete move so far is not from Italy, Spain or Germany, but Turkey.

Fenerbahce step forward

Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi has gone public with a bold claim: that the Istanbul giants have an agreement in place with Greenwood over a four-year deal.

“We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood,” Safi said, declaring that the forward has already proved himself “at the highest level of European football”.

“He has agreed to join Fenerbahçe during the most valuable and productive years of his career. I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise.”

It is a striking statement, and a clear play in a presidential race where star power matters. But even if personal terms are in place, one major hurdle remains.

Marseille’s price – and United’s cut

Fenerbahce still need to strike a deal with Marseille. The French club are reported to be seeking around £47.5 million for Greenwood, a fee that underlines both his performances and the strength of their negotiating position after a successful season.

For United, that number carries particular interest. When they sanctioned Greenwood’s £26m move to Marseille, they inserted a substantial 40 per cent sell-on clause. If Marseille get their asking price and that percentage applies to the full fee, United stand to collect around £19m without lifting a finger in the market.

For a club juggling Financial Fair Play pressures and a major rebuild, that kind of unexpected injection is not a footnote. It matters.

Marseille weigh their options

Inside Marseille, Greenwood’s future is being treated as a strategic decision rather than a simple sale. Sporting director Gregory Lorenzi outlined the club’s stance in an interview with L’Equipe.

“He [Greenwood] is one of the players that we are really thinking about [with regard to] their future. If an opportunity presents itself, naturally, we will think about it,” Lorenzi said.

“But there is the club's position [and] that of the player. It is also up to us to manage internally to find the best possible solution for all parties.”

Marseille know they have a valuable asset. Greenwood, for his part, holds the leverage of a player who has options across Europe. Fenerbahce, meanwhile, are trying to move quickly and decisively, using Safi’s public declaration to set the tone.

United’s quiet interest

United are not in the room for these negotiations, but their presence hangs over every number discussed. The 40 per cent clause turns this from a distant subplot into a transaction with real implications at Old Trafford.

The club will track every twist over the coming weeks – not out of sentiment for a former prodigy, but because a move from Marseille to Istanbul, or anywhere else, could help shape their own summer plans.

Greenwood’s next destination is still to be finalised. What is clear is that his career, once again, is on the move – and this time, Manchester United stand to benefit from every step he takes.
