Manchester United’s smooth pre-season rhythm has hit its first snag. Mason Mount, the midfielder who has been at the heart of their early summer optimism, is set to miss Wednesday’s friendly against Leeds at Croke Park.

Mount has been one of United’s standout performers in their opening three warm-up games, driving play from the number eight role with a sharpness that suggested he was already in mid-season stride. With new signing Andrey Santos stationed just behind him, United’s midfield had started to take on a defined shape: Mount pressing high, linking lines, and setting the tempo.

That momentum stalled in Gothenburg.

Early in Saturday’s draw with Paris St-Germain, Mount took a kick to the foot. It looked innocuous at first. Head coach Michael Carrick withdrew him before half-time and stressed it was a precaution, the kind of early change managers prefer to make in July rather than gamble with fitness. Mount walked to the team coach unaided after the game, offering no obvious signs of discomfort.

But the days since have told a different story.

It is understood the 27-year-old has not trained since the PSG match and is now expected to sit out the meeting with Leeds. For Carrick, it means reshuffling a midfield that had begun to show real promise, and losing a player who had quickly become central to United’s pre-season plans.

The concern now stretches beyond Croke Park.

There is no clarity yet on whether Mount will recover in time for United’s final pre-season fixture, against Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in Wroclaw on Saturday. With the competitive season looming, United must decide how much risk, if any, they are willing to take with a key midfielder whose summer had, until that kick in Gothenburg, looked close to flawless.
