Middlesbrough Nears Deal for Tottenham Defender Ashley Phillips

Middlesbrough are closing in on a deal for Tottenham defender Ashley Phillips in a move that underlines both their promotion ambition and Spurs’ ruthless summer reset.

Standard Sport understands Boro will pay an initial £7million for the 21-year-old, with performance-related add-ons to follow. Phillips is set to undergo a medical, and Tottenham have secured a sell-on clause as part of the agreement, protecting themselves against any future windfall if his value explodes on Teesside.

Kim Hellberg’s side have chased Phillips all summer. They have not been subtle about it, either. After landing striker Will Lankshear from Spurs last month in a club-record deal that could climb to £20m, Middlesbrough are dipping back into the same well.

Hellberg wants another crack at the Premier League after the heartbreak of May, when Hull beat his side in the Championship play-off final. The message since then has been clear: no ripping it up, no retreat. Strengthen, upgrade, go again.

Phillips fits that plan. He is young, quick across the ground and already hardened by the grind of the second tier.

Proven in the Championship at 21

For a 21-year-old, his CV is heavy. Phillips has already passed 100 Championship appearances, collecting minutes and scars at Blackburn, Plymouth and Stoke. He knows the Tuesday nights, the awkward away trips, the aerial battles that never seem to end.

That experience is exactly what Boro are buying. This is not a punt on potential from an academy bench. It is a defender who has lived the division and is still years away from his peak.

Tottenham cash in – and look ahead

Tottenham only signed Phillips last year, paying £2.5m to Blackburn in 2023. Rovers were smart enough to insert a 15 per cent sell-on clause on any profit, so they stand to benefit again as Spurs bank a sizeable margin on a player who has barely scratched the surface in north London.

He will be the latest academy product to leave Spurs permanently this summer, following Lankshear, Alfie Devine and Tynan Thompson out of the door. The pattern is obvious. Tottenham are driving up their sales numbers and edging towards the £100m mark in outgoing fees once the Phillips deal is finalised.

They need it. Spending has already hit £237m on new arrivals in this window alone. The club still expect to bring in two or three more signings before the deadline next month, and those moves will not come cheap.

So Spurs sell, reshape and reload. Middlesbrough, stung by play-off pain, push hard again with a defender built for the division.
