Christian Norgaard’s brief stay in north London is over. One season, 20 appearances, seven Premier League starts – and now a fresh start on Merseyside.

The 32-year-old Danish midfielder completed his move to Everton on Wednesday in a deal believed to be worth £7million, signing a two-year contract at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. He becomes the club’s third signing of the summer, following the arrival of Hayden Hackney and the swift return of former loanee Tyrique George.

For Arsenal, this is another piece of a squad reshape that has gathered pace since the final whistle of a historic campaign. For Norgaard, it is a chance to be central again, not simply the “glue” in the background.

From quiet influence to the exit door

Norgaard never truly forced his way into Mikel Arteta’s strongest XI. Across all competitions, he featured 20 times, often as a late-game stabiliser rather than a headline act. In a title-winning side that also reached only the second Champions League final in the club’s history, his role was subtle, almost invisible to those who only count minutes and goals.

Inside the dressing room, it was clearly different.

“When I brought him here, I said that he could be our glue player – an incredible capacity to bring people together, to keep the standards high,” Arteta said after Arsenal’s 3-1 pre-season defeat to Real Betis at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on Wednesday night. “When he played, he had some really good moments as well, but I understand that to fulfil that role for a long period is not easy.”

The numbers told their own story. Even before Arsenal agreed a £75m deal with Newcastle for Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, Norgaard looked surplus to requirements at the Emirates. Once Guimaraes passed his medical on Wednesday and signed a four-year contract, with confirmation of the move expected shortly, the path out for the Dane became unavoidable.

Arteta did not fight it. He endorsed it.

“He had a massive opportunity with a manager and a club that I know really well and we wish him all the best and thank him,” the Arsenal manager added, nodding to his own past at Everton and to David Moyes, now tasked with unlocking the best of Norgaard in blue.

Everton’s midfield gets its organiser

For Everton, this is a targeted move. Norgaard arrives with deep Premier League experience from his Brentford days and the kind of tactical discipline Moyes has long valued in his midfields. At 32, he is not a project. He is a plug-in solution.

The Toffees have already moved early in the market, and Norgaard’s signing continues that theme. Hackney adds youthful energy, George offers directness and familiarity, and now Norgaard brings structure and leadership. The spine is being rebuilt, piece by piece.

Norgaard himself has described the switch as a “massive opportunity” – a clear hint that he expects to play, not merely cover. After a year spent largely on the fringes of a title-winning squad, he now steps into a club where his voice and presence should carry greater weight.

Arsenal’s clear-out gathers pace

Norgaard’s departure follows Leandro Trossard’s move to Besiktas last month in a deal worth £15.3m, another sign that Arsenal are trimming a squad that has grown deep and expensive. The champions are not finished either.

More exits are expected before the September 1 deadline. The futures of Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri, Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira remain uncertain, while Spanish second-tier side Las Palmas are working on a loan deal for young goalkeeper Tommy Setford, according to reports.

Arsenal, with a title defended and a Champions League final to chase again, are sharpening at the top end of the pitch and in midfield. Guimaraes is the headline act in that evolution. Norgaard becomes one of the necessary sacrifices.

For him, though, this is not a footnote. It is a restart. A two-year contract, a manager who trusts his profile, a fanbase that craves stability in the middle of the park.
