Phil Bardsley on Manchester United's Need for a New Left-Back

Phil Bardsley has never been shy of a firm tackle or a firm opinion. On Manchester United’s summer rebuild, he delivers both.

For the former United defender, the equation is blunt: Luke Shaw’s body can’t be trusted over a punishing season, and Michael Carrick’s squad needs a new left-back now, not later. His answer to that problem is just as clear – Lewis Hall.

Shaw’s reliability problem

Bardsley accepts that Shaw has looked sharp in pre-season. The issue, as he sees it, is everything that comes after August.

With United back in the Champions League and facing a schedule that will stretch from midweek European nights to domestic cup ties and the league grind, Bardsley believes the club cannot pin their hopes on a player whose fitness has repeatedly broken down at key moments. Over a full campaign, he argues, Shaw is a risk.

So for him, the shopping list is obvious: a defensively-minded midfielder and another left-back. Not a project, not a luxury, but players who can walk straight into a squad built to handle 50-plus games.

Why Lewis Hall fits Old Trafford

In that context, Bardsley circles one name in bold ink: Lewis Hall of Newcastle United.

Hall, he says, has the precise profile United need on that flank. Premier League experience. The right age. A style of play that, in Bardsley’s view, “suits Manchester United to a tee.” A modern full-back who can handle both sides of the game and slot into a team that wants to dominate the ball.

The problem is not identifying him. It’s prising him away.

Newcastle have already cashed in on several players this summer and lost Eddie Howe. The sense from Tyneside is that they are in no mood to lose their left-back as well. The Magpies have reportedly made it clear they do not intend to sell Hall in this window, which turns any United interest into a test of resolve and negotiation rather than simple recruitment.

Hall vs Lewis-Skelly: Bardsley’s verdict

When the conversation turns to alternatives, Bardsley draws another hard line. Given a straight choice between Hall and Myles Lewis-Skelly, the Premier League-winning Arsenal youngster, he doesn’t hesitate.

He rates Lewis-Skelly highly. The Arsenal prospect has already tasted the biggest stages, winning the league and starting a Champions League final in midfield. But that, for Bardsley, is exactly the point: Lewis-Skelly is a midfielder first, and a better one when used there.

United, he insists, don’t need another young midfielder added to a crowded centre of the pitch. They need a proven defensive midfielder with experience, someone ready to “own that position” immediately. As a left-back solution, Hall is simply a better fit.

“If I had to pick between the two of them,” Bardsley says, “it’s Lewis Hall every day of the week and twice on Sunday.”

The line underlines his stance: this is not a marginal call. It’s decisive.

United’s narrowing options

For now, the entire discussion remains hypothetical. United have not yet lodged a formal bid for either Hall or Lewis-Skelly, and both selling clubs are digging in.

Newcastle are resistant over Hall. Arsenal appear equally unwilling to part with one of their most prized prospects. That leaves United’s recruitment team scanning the market for other solutions.

One of those is already on the radar: Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, another left-back linked with a move to Old Trafford. If Hall proves impossible to extract and Lewis-Skelly stays locked into Arsenal’s plans, United may be forced down that route or towards a different name altogether.

The need, though, is not in doubt. In Bardsley’s eyes, United can’t roll into a season of Champions League demands and domestic expectation relying on Shaw alone. Whether the answer is Hall, Robinson, or someone yet to emerge, the question now is simple: who will be trusted to guard that left flank when the games start to pile up?
