Real Madrid Moves Closer to Signing Diomande as Barcelona Misses Out

Yan Diomande is not a Real Madrid player yet, but the deal is now moving with the inevitability of a freight train. Barring a late twist, the 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger is heading to the Bernabéu for a fee in the region of €120 million, on a five-year contract reportedly running until 2031.

For a player Leipzig only recently brought in, the price tells its own story. So does the list of clubs he has just turned down.

Barcelona’s early move that never took off

Before Madrid put their foot down on the accelerator, Barcelona had already circled Diomande. According to Mundo Deportivo, club representatives contacted Leipzig to sound out the player’s availability, leaning on the good relationship forged during the Dani Olmo deal.

The answer from Germany was blunt. Leipzig were not planning to sell. Not unless someone came in with an offer that tore up the normal market logic.

Officials at the club made it clear: any conversation would start above €100 million.

Barcelona stepped back. They were never going to reach that figure, and events since have blown straight past it, with Madrid now prepared to go significantly higher.

Yet the Catalans did more than just pick up the phone. They met Diomande’s camp in April and May, at the height of a breakout Bundesliga season in which the Ivory Coast international racked up 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances. His numbers, his acceleration, his one‑v‑one threat – all of it screamed “next big thing.”

Barcelona liked what they saw. The problem was Leipzig liked him even more.

When the German side refused to even open formal talks, the La Liga champions turned elsewhere.

From Diomande to Gordon and Adeyemi

Once it became clear Leipzig would only budge for a nine-figure bombshell, Barcelona pivoted. The club explored keeping Marcus Rashford longer before settling on a different profile: Anthony Gordon.

Gordon arrived for €70 million plus €10 million in bonuses, a substantial outlay but still far below the level Madrid are now ready to reach for Diomande. On top of that, Barça added Karim Adeyemi, another forward who can play across the front line and stretch defences, again for a combined cost that undercuts the Diomande package.

In pure market terms, Barcelona have traded the promise of a 19-year-old for the relative certainty of players with more top-level experience and a broader body of work. Whether that proves wise or short-sighted will only be clear once the ball starts rolling in earnest.

A Europe-wide chase

Barcelona were not alone. Once Diomande’s season caught fire, the suitors lined up.

Atletico Madrid entered the conversation. Clubs from the Premier League and Ligue 1 followed with offers once the campaign ended. PSG even went as far as reaching an agreement with the player himself, only to hit a wall when it came to negotiating with Leipzig.

That deadlock opened the door. Real Madrid walked straight through it.

Their proposal, both to Leipzig and to the player, has shifted the entire landscape. The German club, so firm in their stance just months ago, are now close to accepting a package that reflects both Diomande’s current impact and his projected ceiling.

Madrid gamble on tomorrow’s superstar

For Madrid, this is a familiar play: pay huge money early, trust the talent, and let the club’s environment do the rest. The fee – around €120 million – places Diomande in the bracket reserved for generational bets. There is no hiding at that price.

Barcelona, by contrast, exit the race having built a different kind of attack: Gordon’s work rate and directness, Adeyemi’s versatility, and the comfort of knowing they have spread the risk rather than staking it all on one teenager.
